Yes I'm aware of that. BUT you're not allowed to legally purchase a handgun until you're 21 (and thus my interpretation of not allowed to possess and handgun until you're 21). Gun shops aren't even supposed to let people under 21 handle any handguns.
Am I wrong in this interpretation?
I'd hate for him to get in any trouble that would prevent him from owning/carrying handguns in the future.
Transfer through an FFL requires you to be 21. In some states when you are 18 you can purchase a handgun private party (no ffl transfer like in pa), you still can't purchase a gun through an FFL in that state because that is a federal restrction, not state.
A parent can purchase and give to a child. In my understanding a sheriff can also transfer the firearm since they only do a pics and not file the same paperwork an ffl does. It's all about transfer, not possession.
Well I am planning on my mom buying me one and giving it to me!
Well hey, "learn something new every day", as they say.
You, being 18 you can legally own a handgun (gifted to you by a parent or grandparent) and you can even open carry at this age. You can even hunt with a handgun at this age.
A person cannot but a handgun until they are 21.
Incorrect, this was addressed in post #8
