.
what would you do if that firearm was used in a crime and is now in your possession ?
i would suggest calling the police and let them deal with it

Has been documented and already done. Just trying to find rightful owner if it was a responsible firearm owner who lost it while driving a motorcycle.
Was handed to the Emmaus Police Department.
Understand your concern though.

I wouldn't care? I'm not a suspect in any crime.

If it happened to be a .308 rifle, you would be.

Only if it had a GPS tracker in the stock. Unless we are now searching all homes east of the Susquehanna. I missed that memo.
I'm pretty sure there are tens of thousands of people with .308 rifles in their homes sleeping soundly in our neck of the woods tonight.

When one of their own is gunned-down, the govt can be quite thorough. A tip that someone looking like you, getting back into your car with tag XXX-XXX after retrieving a rifle from the side of the road, would generate some interest. A canvass of the local business security cam footage, a review of partial plates....
Remember back in 2003, what the FBI did after that AUSA Wales was killed with a gun using an aftermarket Makarov barrel? They went after EVERY Makarov barrel sold in this country by Federal Arms, all across the nation. Thousands of them. I saw one of the subpoenas, issued against a PA resident who was thousands of miles away from the crime scene in Washington state.

Pssst...with that kind of shared experience, were I OP, I would delete subject title and narrative and ask responders to do the same. Wait. That will just make you look even more guilty. You inna heapa trouble, boy.

No, it's one or the other, not both.
1. They could investigate everyone that bought a .308 rifle from an FFL. But, unlike Federal Arms, there is no database for FFL rifle purchases. So, that's nearly impossible. And would not catch me because I found a rifle. Or,
2. Somebody sees me picking up a gun and calls the cops. Heck, maybe somebody saw the guy that ACTUALLY SHOOTING THE COPS. Apparently that didn't happen.
One has nothing to do with the other, and neither is related to your example. They can't look up everybody that bought a .308 and they sure can't look up everybody that found a rifle.
No, finding a gun does not make me a suspect regardless of its caliber.

Not in trouble just an honest citizen who lawfully returned firearm to the local PD. Now just being helpful to the owner. If mods feel otherwise please delete this post.
