Someone had mentioned earlier that they based their choice on kinetic energy alone. I was just stating that kinetic energy alone is not a number to base your choice of ammo on.
I also said you want as much penetration as possible TO A POINT. No more. You certianly can get into overkill with things like .44 mag, even .357.
I prefer big caliber so i prefer .45
i have tons of .45acp, .357 and .38 spec brass accumulated over 40 tears of shooting and reloading, but once-fired .45s and .38/.357s in quantity are becoming scarce because 9mms and .40s are the preferred brass of the military and police depts.
if i were a newb, 9mms and .40s would be my auto-loader choices.

I'm perfectly happy shooting my .45 ACP 1911s. One day I'll get a .40, but when I do it'll be a 10mm Colt Delta Elite. Well, that's just me. :)
