Out of state carry - South Carolina
Just wondering if anyone had any experience dealing with South Carolina? I checked the reciprocity map here on PAFOA and saw that there is no PA-SC reciprocity. Then I checked Utah, and found that SC doesn't honor Utah permits, either.
Any word on open carry? Or am I limited to unloading and locking the gun up in the trunk when driving through there?
Re: Out of state carry - South Carolina
There is no legal way for a PA resident to carry in SC, unless you own enough land down there to qualify for the special exception license. SC only honors resident licenses, so any other state's permit would do you no good in SC.
Glovebox and console carry is legal without a license. And also between your vehicle and place of stay.
Re: Out of state carry - South Carolina
So open carry is legal there, even in a vehicle? That's good.
Overall, it's annoying, though. My dad and I are going to be on a road trip, driving from there back up to Pa. later this year. SC is the only no-go zone for concealed carry we'll be going through.
Is there any issue with flying into a SC airport with an (unloaded, properly secured) pistol on a commercial airliner?
Re: Out of state carry - South Carolina
No. Both open and concealed carry is forbidden in SC unless you meet one of the exemptions. What is legal is putting the firearm in the glovebox or console.

For airliner - typical TSA requirements.

Thanks for the link, I'd forgotten about handgunlaw.us.
So it's okay to have a loaded pistol in the closed glove compartment, but not to just openly carry one. Interesting way to do things.

Re: Out of state carry - South Carolina
Yup.. Once you get out of the airport, load it and stick it in the glovebox. Then when you get out to go into your motel/hotel/rental - carry it concealed directly to your room/dwelling.
Its like that in a few states. FL is the similar.. Open carry is forbidden, concealed carry is legal with a CWP or reciprocal license. But you can carry it concealed from your place of abode directly to your vehicle and then put it in a glove box, or keep in a secure container(snapped holster, zipped gun bag, etc) and not have it readily accessible (think 2 steps to retrieve it).
Re: Out of state carry - South Carolina
Interesting, I saw per that link from Knight that Florida permits are accepted in SC. I might look into obtaining one of those just in case I have any Imperial Entanglements while down there...
Re: Out of state carry - South Carolina
Only resident licenses are honored in SC. A PA resident with a FL permit is carrying just another wallet weight in SC.

O/T, but I'm pretty sure the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee also have the aerodynamic properties of a toaster and get 12MPG! My mother-in-law has a Grand Cherokee with the 5.7L HEMI in it, and every time I touch the accelerator while driving it, it's all I can do to keep it under control and not burn rubber....
