Your preferred gun lube ?
I need to maintain my investments in steel and alloy .
Paying high prices for little bottles or spray cans of exotic liquids offends my sensibilities.
Is there anything better than marvel mystery oil, or Ed's Red (automatic transmission fluid cut with acetone)?
What is your go-to protectant?
Re: Your preferred gun lube ?
Currently Lucas Extreme.. Slip2000 overall works well on multiple guns.. I don't tend to stick with one brand though..
Re: Your preferred gun lube ?
KY....errrr...you said gun lube?
WeaponShield, in that case
Re: Your preferred gun lube ?
All of the "super lubes" on the market are mostly hype in a very expensive little bottle. For an internal lube I usually use a small amount of CLP but for an external wipe down I keep a rag slightly damped with a few squirts of Mobile 1 synthetic oil I keep in a plastic bag. Just like the Wally's gun rag for the old timers out there. I also use a pound can of white lithium grease for Garands and M1 carbine and the smallest dab of grease from the GI issue grease pots (but any cheap grease will work) on the slide tracks of auto pistols. I avoid anything with moly because you will have black crap all over.
For bore cleaning I have been making Eds red by the quart for over 30 years and it is an excellent bore solvent with some residual oil from the ATF (which is also a good gun oil). Unless it is for long term storage I don't separately oil my bores after cleaning. My recipe is the original one which is equal parts ATF, kerosene, mineral spirits paint thinner, and acetone. I also use shooters choice (with ammonia) for heavy copper fouling and JB's bore paste for when all else fails on a neglected bore.

Is Hoppes #9 not sufficient?

It doesn't do the best. It gums up in cold weather. I use Break Free CLP with good results.
Re: Your preferred gun lube ?
Ballistol on wood, CLP on most metal surfaces, and a tiny dab of red gun grease on semi-auto rails.
Re: Your preferred gun lube ?
Is your formula for Ed's red just atf and acetone? (Edit: as delkal mentions)
I use his original formula of equal parts kerosene, atf and mineral spirits, omitting the acetone.
Remember reading somewhere the acetone was mainly to clean wad fouling out of shotguns.
His thoughts on it: https://forum.castbulletassoc.org/th...with-ed-s-red/
Few years ago had some fluid film left over from a project and wiped a couple shotguns down that are kept in an unheated garage. Gotta say I'm impressed with it. Tad pricey around $12, but a can should last years in this application since it should be used sparingly.
Re: Your preferred gun lube ?
Mobil one for oil and Super Lube for grease. I got a bunch of syringes cheap from Amazon that I use for applying it.
