Personal Tips and tricks in pistol cleaning

Hey all,
I started this thread in hopes that we all can share the lil' tricks we have learned to make pistol/rifle cleaning faster and easier. I don’t know about everyone else, but I am really meticulous when I clean my pieces and it can sometimes take me awhile The one trick I did learn recently is the use of a still business card and some cloth patches. Wrap the patch cloth around the card and it’s a great tool for cleaning out the grit in those pesky tight places. Q-tips are also really really handy.

And my question would be, when you clean your barrels, how many times/how often do you run the brush through first? I clean my guns every other time i go so I suppose I should not do it too often?

A tip on gun cleaning that I can share for this thread, is..

I actually hate cleaning my guns. I hate getting that black stuff under my fingernails. I think I might just fork out the $10 and have my range clean my guns for me.

My 9mm and 357 normally see atleast 100 rounds, the 445SM about 50-100 when they go to the range. I do clean and brush them everytime. I may be a bit obsessive, but barrels can be expensive. I use a number of different solvents, Hoppes, kroil, bright-bore, or G-96. I usually run the brush through 5-6 times then go to another gun and do the same. I then coat the inside with solvent, have a beverage and watch tv for 15 to 20 minutes, rebrush and clean the rest of the gun. Some times the lead takes a bit more work. I don't shoot more than about 3-4 times a month so I feel that the brushing can't be as bad as a dirty barrel laying around. By the way, I was very pleased to find this sight. I plan to keep it high on my favorites list.

BN, try using laytex gloves when cleaning...prevents your hands from touching the solvents and powder residue.

$10 to clean is cheap...I've heard it as high as $25 per weapon...heck I'd clean a firearm for $25. Perhaps, I should offer that service. HAHA...try cleaning 6-10 weapons at a time...good thing I can clean them fast.

May I ask if everyone cleans a new gun first before firing it? I just bought a Sig Mosquito and the manual recommends cleaning it before I initially run rounds through it.

Having someone else clean your guns is like hiring someone else to make love to your wife.

I prefer to do certain jobs myself as I believe I can do a more thouough job and insure they will work properly when I am finished.

Q-tips do a nice job on slide rails.

For a quick clean of trigger groups without disassembly, Ronsonol lighter fluid washes out gunk and leaves a smooth film behind (Jewell recommends lighter fluid for their triggers).

I always clean a new gun before shooting it.

Whether it be a rifle, shotgun or handgun, I always clean it before heading to the range!
