I'm sure people will chime in with how great their Kimber is, but I've sent more back than I can remember, and watched them choke over, and over, and over.

Take a look at m1911.org's Kimber forum....the first page is almost always dedicated to threads about Kimbers not running.

Honestly, if you want a 1911 that is worth trusting your life to... I would suggest reading up on 10-8forums, and m4c...where users who carry 1911's into harms way share their experience. You'll see the SA MC Operator, SA Professional, and WC CQB as popular choices amongst discerning shooters. The SA Loaded is often a good starting point, if you feel the MC Operator is too steep.

Keep in mind, you see all kinds of people raving about their Taurus's and Kel-Tec's, at times. My advice? Research your options thoroughly.
You got is Synergy.... thats what i was kiinda hinting at but didnt want to turn this into a kimber hate thread, HHHMMMMMM wheres Fulton county shooter to rave about his 50' groups he shoots with his, yes the Wilson CQB is a great pistol and i love mine, but i have had 4 Kimbers and all had problems, i would never chance my life on a KImber ever. but to each his own. i know that Fingers has great luck with his or he wouldnt be carrying it. others do too, but on the average they are not a very reliable gun and are not what they are cracked up to be.

Thumbs up Re: Kimber Pro Carry 2 vs. Kimber Custom 2

Man... I feel bad for you guys! I'm sorry to hear that your Kimbers didn't run reliably... but my 2 Kimbers run perfectly fine, not a hitch.

My first is a Custom CDPII - full size, aluminum frame, worked 100% since it came out of the box. I have never had one single failure with it, and I've gone through a couple thousand rounds with it, including a 3-day long pistol course with Giles through F.I.R.E. Institute.

My second is a SIS Pro - 4", steel frame. Substantially heavier than my CDP, but carries nice. I was surprised how big of a difference that 1" makes for CC. Initially, it had some issues returning to full battery - now, I'm talking out of the box, 1 round per 25 or so, in the first couple hundred rounds. As I shot more and more, the failure got less and less frequently. Lycan and I looked at it, and decided that it just needs broken-in more. I shot it more, and Lycan gave it a quick "fluff and buff" chamber polish, and now, not only is it 100% reliable, it'll feed empties all day long with no issues at all.

Other than the initial break-in with the SIS, I've had no problems what so ever with any of my Kimbers, and they're both more accurate than I am, and I can pretty consistently put 1-hole groups at 8yards/25ft when I try.

(of course, I would never recommend carrying a firearm you haven't put several hundred rounds through without issues.)

for Home Defense, I'd pick as big a gun as I can... so 5" trumps 4". Also, I think the recoil from a 4" is a good bit snappier than a 5", so a 5" should be easier to shoot (it is for me, at least). Also, a gov't size 1911 will have a 20-25% longer sight radius than a commander size, helping with accuracy.

The only thing I'd like the 4" over the 5" is if you're going to conceal.

Either way, I like my Kimbers a lot

FWIW my first pistol was a custom II and while it was accurate (when it shot), after less then 500 rds through it the barrel cracked and was consequently sold shortly after.

The Aluminum frames, also increase the felt recoil.

My Kimber PCII 9mm pictured above was functional out of the box, but fit and finish were a little disappointing at the first detail strip. That's when I decided to do a full upgrade package-Here's the list....
Cylinder&Slide hammer group (sear, hammer, disconnect fitted)
Ed Brown hammer strut
Ed Brown ss rebuild kit (pins and such)
Wilson Combat ambi thumb safety
Kimber ss slide stop and ss grip safety
Nowlins ss mag release (didn't like the hex on original)
Wilson Combat Speed-Chute MSH/magwell
Kimber Mepro tactical night sights
I fitted and tuned this pistol. I guess it's not really a Kimber anymore. I may have just talked you out of a Kimber, but just like any other 1911 with some time and trouble you can make them perfect.
Good luck with whatever you do.
My Best,
Walt

Why buy a bottom end ,then make it a top end, when you could have bought a top-end....?

Default Since you asked...

I love to tinker on 1911's it's a hobby, and even the high end guns sometimes are not right out of the box. So why not take a sow's ear and turn it into a silk purse?
My Taurus PT1911 was my first project pistol, bought strictly for that purpose. I looked until I found one without all the documented faults I had read about, and happened upon one on a Saturday morning that was a distributors demo, just dropped off the evening before. The pistol was very tight out of the box. I put 1K rounds through it before a full house reconstruction. The only factory parts left on this pistol are the series 80 safety components. Rebuild is Ed Brown, Wilson Combat,Cylinder&Slide, and Novak's.
Here's what I ended up with after untold hours of fitting and tuning, and it is a flawless performer...

It was a good pistol to start, a great pistol now... and I built it.
