Default Taurus Slim 709 - Initial Review

Took a trip to Cabelas on Saturday to pick up my new Benelli shotgun as well as Taurus's new single stack 9mm pistol, the 709 Slim.

I have not got a chance to shoot it yet and I'm not sure when I will get a chance but after looking the gun over I really like it.

Overall the gun reminds me of a cheap Glock. Reason being is the finish on this gun and the internals arn't up to the standards on my Glock. However, the take down of the gun is almost the same, trigger also has a safety built in.

When I got home I decided to check if any of my holsters would fit it and wouldn't you know the Supertuck that I use for my Glock 19 fit the new Taurus almost perfectly! It will work. The gun also has a manual safety and adjustable rear site for windage and elevation.

The size of the gun makes it very very easy to conceal - heck its thinner then my cell phone. This gun should be great for my summer carry routine provided it shoots well.

Model: 709SS
Finish: Matte Stainless Steel
Status: Available
Caliber: 9 mm
Grips: Checkered Polymer
UPC: 7-25327-60563-8
Capacity: 8 +1
Weight: 19 oz
Rate of Twist: 1
Barrel Length: 3"
Frame: Compact
Action: SA
Front Sight: Fixed
Length: 6"

Here are some pics of it ...

Um... I kinda like it. Plastic or metal guide rod? Will be interested in your range report. If you don't mind me asking, what did it set you back?

The guide rod (if I remember right) was a metal but cheaper. I will have to double check. It set me back $344.99 (Cabelas had it listed for $389). Everyone complains that Cabelas is high in price but guess what they price match so I just had them call a local gun shop to verify the price. Local gun shop had it at 349.99 - so Cabelas beat it by $5. Some might say well I like to support the local guy and while I like to do that as well I had Cabelas points, and a gift certificate to use.

Very interested in this gun...I need a highly concealable piece. Let us know how it shoots and feels.

I hate to jump the gun on this one, but I would really like to see a side by side with the Kel Tec PF-9.... Just a thought

If I had a PF-9 I would ....

Here are the specs.

709
6" OAL - 0.8' W - 4.3" H - 19oz - 8+1

PF9
5.85" OAL - .88" W - 4.3" H - 12.7oz - 7+1

Here is a thread where they compare it to a LCP and a Glock

The PF9 is lacking in the manual safety department... not that thats a bad thing for everyone though.

I like them both.

It may be a personal decision but I like the look and finish of the 709 over the Kel Tec. Can anyone confirm how many mags come with the Kel Tec - the 709 came with two mags. Does the Kel Tec have adjustable sights, the 709 does!
