Question barrel leading problem

i have a bad leading problem in a barrel that i shot lead bullets then jacketed through. i've tried hoppe's, hoppe's elite and blue wonder with patches, a brush and a bore snake. any tricks to get bad leading out of a barrel? will it help to shoot it with jacketed again then clean immediately afterwards? thanks.

Sometimes shooting jacketed bullets helps clean out a lightly leaded barrel - but if its really leaded, it'd just likely cause more of a problem by causing a spiked pressure and a kaboom.

There are solvents specifically for lead - but you have to let enough time for them to react chemically then gotta use a bronze/copper brush.

I've used Sharp Shoot and Outers products with good success. The most stubborn barrels ended up getting a 0000 steel wool patch/plug worked up and down the barrel**.

How big is the bore?

avoid on top dollar guns, should only run thru a few times careful to not scratch bore.

Well, thats good then. Usually easier to work with bigger bores.

This is the stuff I've used before. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpag...eitemid=398676

Other lead solvents: http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/sto...x?c=147&p=4795

What kind of brush did you use? Plastic bristle brushes wont cut it - gotta use a metal brush. It all wont come out at once, you have to apply, then clean/scrub, apply, then clean/scrub, etc.. Depending on how bad it it you may get a good workout on your arms.

If the product above dont work, you can try the following too.

Look for " PN#516-100-044 Lead Remover Kit, .44 $26.59"
http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/sto...LEAD%20REMOVER

If all that doesn't work - fine grade steel wool. grade 0000 or 00000. Make yourself a wad or patch around a small bore's patch pusher head and run it up and down the bore a few times, then inspect. You might need to re-hone the bore with Flitz polish to remove any scratches.

The Lewis Lead Remover works very well to pull lead out of the barrel and the other piece to the set is used on the forcing cone. Once you use it you can the finish the process with one of the liquids use to dissolve lead to get the bore sparkling clean. Kroil is another product that will get under the lead and help lift it off. There are numerous products designed to remove lead buildup. Look in Brownells, MidwayUSA, Natchez Shooting Supplies, MidSouth Shooters Supply, etc.

I also like the Lewis Lead Remover, but if one is unavailable, wrap a few strands from a copper "Chore Boy" scouring pad around a worn bore brush and use that. It will cut the lead out pretty quickly. Make sure it is genuine solid copper Chore Boy, not some off brand copper plated steel.

Attach a brass brush to a cleaning rod, then to a drill. Soak the barrel of solvent, and get to work. I suggest using brass everything, brush and rod so you don't damage your gun.

All great advice. Magnums have a tendency to lead more because of the higher velocities. A brass/copper brush and some elbow grease should do the trick. Soak the barrel and run the brush thru a few times and soak it again. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes and brush again. Fouling will still be an issue shooting lead but if you stay on top of cleaning the bore regularly, it will be easier to clean.
