Default Purchasing a handgun in MD.

A friend of mine lives just over the border in Maryland. He wants to get a gun to protect his family, due to some recent crime in the area.

I searched the internet and it turns out Md is drastically different from PA.

Does anyone know the steps, or could point me to the steps to obtaining a gun in maryland? I know there is a safety "course" that has to be done prior.

But, is it legal for him to come into PA, purchase a gun and take it back with him? I know he'd have to register it with MD. But is that all?

They don't seem to make it real easy to access this info.

Any advice/links would be great.

I assume we're talking handguns? If so, no way for him to buy here while living there. An FFL here would have to ship it to an FFL there. The "safety course" is a short benign video that most dealers either have to have ready access to.

Maryland has a seven day waiting period for purchasing a handgun. They also have many handguns that are not allowed to be sold in the state. There is a long list of those, including the Thompson Center Encore.

If we're talking long guns then its just a simple walk in (in either state), pay your money, do the insta check and take it home.

I would suggest that he get a long gun or move across the border like I did.

Are AR's and AK's legal in the state of MD?

Default Re: Purchasing a handgun in MD.

AR's and AK's are legal here, but are "regulated" and require the 7 day wait.

Handguns:
You either must- watch safety video at dealer's, watch safety video online, or do the page by page reading version if you have dialup. When doing it online you print a certificate at the end, and you must send one part to the state police.

OR- take current hunter safety class, or have taken in in 2002 or later.

New guns sold have to come with spent casing- dealers will have for any new handgun they stock. Used guns do not require it.

Handguns must be sold with an integral locking device- the easiest is an interbarrel device dealers charge 20-30.00 for, or the dealer will give you an inclusive price of the gun+ locking device.

usual paperwork- including a mental health medical info release form- this is only for public hospital type stuff and involuntary commitals, NOT your family Dr's records of your medical history, so if you are on antidepressants as treatment for a diagnosis by your private family Dr, do not sweat it.

7 day waiting period, call dealer on 7th day to see if the paperwork is in marked " not disapproved"

MSP fee-10.00 for processing and background check

You pay sales tax on gun

Buying from PA FFL- lets say there's a used gun that is a super duper deal at a PA dealer.

1) PA dealer will sell to you, but you MUST have a MD FFL to have it shipped to.
2) You pay PA dealer for the gun and shipping ( also wise to buy the intergral lock at this time and have it shipped w/gun- it may be cheaper to buy this from the PA dealer)
3) if its a new gun, the PA dealer must have a spent casing in the case for that gun
4) gun is shipped to MD dealer, and MD dealer notifies you to come fill out paperwork
5) paperwork is submitted, you pay MD dealer their transfer fee at the time you do the paperwork
6) 7 day waiting period

Shipping may run 25.00, integral lock 20-30.00, transfer fee 25-45.00 and MSP fee 10.00NO SALES TAX

A MD resident can also buy a used handgun from another person, however they must go to an FFL or the state police to do the transfer. Background check and 7 day wait still required for buyer. FFL charges to do paperwork and transfer and 10.00 SP fee, SP probably just charges the 10.00 fee. Seller must retain handgun until 7 day wait is over and buyer is "not dissaproved", or the gun can be left with the FFL for the wait, if transfer done through the FFL.

MD is a little peculiar about their permits too (IMO). From here in PA to North Carolina, Maryland is the only state that does not honor a PA LTCF.
