Default I want to get rid of my FLGR . . . . help me?

All three of my 1911s have full length guide rods, and I want to replace them with the "short" rods, mainly for cosmetic reasons. I want the closed plug at the end rather than the open plug on the guns.

Something like this:
http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/sto...0SPRING%20PLUG

Now, if I get a short guide rod and one of those plugs, does anything need fitted, and does it change the field strip procedure at all?

Thanks
Dave

1911 is on a distinguished road

They should drop right in. As far as stripping, it's easier. Unless you have a really tight bushing, you can depress the plug with a finger and turn the bushing with the other hand. With a full length rod, I always have to depress the plug with the bottom of a mag or use a bushing wrench.

I have guns with both, just because they came that way. I prefer the GI style short rod and bushing but I have to admit that with the slide locked back, a full length rod looks pretty neat.

I've never messed with a FLGR, but I think you'll need one of these http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/sto...SPRING%20GUIDE

Field strip will consist of pushing in the cap down, rotating the bushing CW, let the recoil spring out, then rotate the bushing CCW and out

You won't need one of those. You can just use the back half of the two piece rod ( if it has a two piece).

The OP didn't mention if his full length rods are two piece or one piece, but like I said if they are indeed two piece, just use the back half. That's what how I run my TRP and haven't had any problems to date.

If they are springers they usually have 2 piece FLGR`s.
