The M&P 40 I got was built on 04/01/08 and it has that teardrop cut also. I did not think it as a big deal or am I wrong? Should I call S&W tomorrow?

mine is same. Mine is series E.
Even if S&W send me return kit, I prolly won't send it back.

My gun shoots, shoots accurately, and fire and extract each and everytime trigger is pulled without fail this past 6000rds or so. I don't see why i have to go my pieceless for something that seems like not bothering the function of my weapon....

with my luck, if i send the gun away, that'll be when we'll encounter Zombi apocolypse, and I have to fight my way to walmart for shelter and to save hot chicksfrom certain doom without my most trusted sidearm....

And I've seen those guns with those same cuts in their breech face go 20k+ rounds without a ruptured primer....on about 4 different samples.

If sending it back makes you feel better, go ahead.....just don't be surprised when you get the gun back looking exactly the same.

Synergy,
Your prediction and comments were correct !
I got a call from the S&W representative yesterday who told me that the "teardrop" was fine and put there intentionally.
He said the reason for the teardrop was that the first run of M&P 9MM's and .40's had some problems with misfires.S&W determined that high pressure loads in those calibers were causing cratering around the firing pin/striker tip and when the slide unlocked metal from the primer cup could be "shaved off".
An accumulation of these shavings in the striker channel, could impede the striker tip and the resulting light primer hit frequently resulted in misfires.
Exactly how the teardrop prevents primer "shaving",I am not quite certain.
He was very courteous and said that S&W's policy was to contact the customer to discuss their findings instead of just sending a note saying that the gun "was in spec" as many companies do.
He said the gun would likely ship today. If it arrives tomorrow, that would be a turn-around time of 10 days, which is much better than I expected or hoped for.
Ron

PS - the gun did arrive Thursday.S&W ,apparently, is really committed to Customer Service.
