    ZET70,
You have a first year of production for the 1st Model (1956 - 1972-73). Early ones had the flat sided barrel and jeweled hammer. The marbled grips, H&R called them STAG, are also characteristic of the early pieces. I've found my little 2 1/2" barrel piece (actually a model 930 with Chrome finish) with full size grips to be remarkabley accurate for a snubby.

Handgun production stopped sometime in the mid '90s for both companies. I think it was when the company re-corp'd as H&R 1871, Inc. After that point H&R/NEF only made starter/blank revolvers for some years. They too have been since removed from their website.

Jim, aka "32 Magnum", will know better as to the exact details. I really cant remember precisely the years when things changed around.
Here is the "timeline" for H&R - from info I just received from a VERY RELIABLE source. Jim Hauff

1871 Franklin Wesson & Gilbert Harrington start: WESSON & HARRINGTON
1874 William Richardson buys out F. Wesson's interest, HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON formed.
1888 Company name changed to HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON ARMS CO.
1953 Company name changed to HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON, INC.
1984 In December, H&R Inc. begins operating under Chap. 11 bankruptcy proceedings
1986 In February, H&R Inc. ceases operations, having sold all finished goods, work in process, parts, etc
1986 In December, FLAMBEAU CORP., an investment company, purchased some of the H&R, INC
assets, including trade names, with no liabilities through a sale approved by the Bankruptcy Court.
The land and buildings were not a part of the asset purchase as there was soil contamination.
NEW ENGLAND FIREARMS CO., INC., a management company, was formed to lease the
equipment held by FLAMBEAU and to produce and market firearms at Gardner, MA site.
1987 In January, NEW ENGLAND FIREARMS CO., INC. began production of the "PARDNER", a single
barrel shotgun. Later that year, NEF began producing single shot rifles and several
    handgun models.
1991 A new corp., H&R 1871, INC. formed in June and purchased some of the assets from
FLAMBEAU, later that year NEF CO. INC dissolved.
Application to the US Patent Office was made and granted for registration of [NEW ENGLAND
FIREARMS as a brand name. Products under that name are sold to distributors and mass
    merchants.
H&R 1871, INC. applied for and was granted registration of the name HARRINGTON &
RICHARDSON. This brand of "upscale" firearms is sold only through selected distributors and
is exported widely around the world.
1995 H&R 1871, INC introduced the WESSON & HARRINGTON brand of firearms, after
brand name was registered and granted with/by US Patent Office.
2000 On November 10, the MARLIN FIREARMS CO. purchased the assets of H&R 1871, INC.
and the name was changed to H&R 1871, LLC - a wholly owned subsidiary of MARLIN.
2008 April REMINGTON buys MARLIN, including H&R 1871, LLC.
    NEF Brand name dropped.

Looking online I can see one is worth between $150-$200 without the paperwork, which he doesn't have. I just wanted to get a confirmation on that. He doesn't know much about it other than his father purchased in the 1950's (At least he thinks) and has enjoyed plinking and hunting small game with it for decades
LIFE IN PA,That 929 with an 'AY' prefix was made in 1982 - it is a 2nd Model (1974 - 1986). It has the transfer bar safety/ignition system. Came with 2 1/2" round butt, 4" or 6" square but and only in blued finish. The 929 models were one of the most popular H&R .22s for plinking and general shooting. Current retail values (as I've observed) will top out just above $200 with papers and box. Nice guns.
Thanks Magnum, I am going to pass on this information. One last question since you seem to be an expert would you know where I could find the same exact 929 model for myself? I am probably going to get myself one by the end of the year. I would like to get one that's in excellent condition for $200 or less. Thanks again.

    LifeinPA,
You gotta do the dirty work. They seem to pop-up at gun shows pretty darn regularly - and there's almost always one two or three on the on-line gun auction sites. Prices are reasonable and usually in the ranges cited. You can find them in 2 1/2", 4" and 6" versions - with the 2 1/2"ers usually selling a bit higher. They are out there, now go get one (or two or all three).

Well I passed on that information about the 929 I posted pictures of a few days ago and he was thrilled. His father has another, older 929 of a different barrel length so he was wondering if you could tell me when it was produced, what it is worth and any other "fun facts"? This is the information he provided me:

    -H&R Model 929
    -2" inch barrel "SideKick"
    -Westchester, Mass
    -Serial Number: F54039

Says this was the pistol his father supposedly purchased in 1950.

Any information would be welcomed, thanks.
