My buddy went to the range tonight and while shooting his Springfield XD-9 the chamber cover (please excuse my terminology) broke and flew off. Has anyone heard of this happening before with an XD? None of the guys at the range have, and neither have I. The gun can't have any more than 1000 rds through it.

**Update**
Springfield offered to replace the entire gun since they do not have replacement slides. My buddy was looking to get some custom work done and they are going to ship the new gun with everything he's ordering already done to it. Unfortunately they wouldn't discount the custom work, but still pretty cool they replaced the entire gun. |

What are you calling the chamber cover? I have an XD45 and since you indicated you may not be using the proper termonology I am curious as to what part of this pistol failed. I am glad to hear SA is replacing the pistol for your friend.
The chamber is the rear most part of the barrel. The part outside of the barrel is the slide. So I am not sure if there was a chamber failure, slide failure or both. Just curious since I have a XD45 and I have heard enough about the glock Kb. Was he using factory loads or hand loads? I have to wonder if he may have had a an over charge or hot load? |

I've heard of the XD V10 series having problems.

I was referring to the piece of the slide which covers the ejector port. It only partially came off and then my buddy removed the rest. He was firing Federal American Eagle 124gr 9mm FMJ so I don't think the ammo was the problem.
Thanks for the link Aubie. |

It's not ever a question of if a problem will occur because it's bound to happen. What really counts is how it's resolved. In this instance I say well done on the part of Springfield. However, based upon everything I know about the XD I'm very surprised something like this ever even happened. Hopefully just a fluke. |

He sent me a pic on my phone, but I have been unsuccessful in emailing it to my PC. However I was inccorect as to which piece broke. It was the part of the slide that is the "bridge" between the ports. Apparently the piece connecting near the front sight snapped first and then he took the rest off. www.xdtalk.com shows someone having this problem as well. He may switch to an unported model.
