Glock 17 or XD9 Tactical. Just need help deciding which to get. I do range shooting and also for home protection. Want the nine for cheaper ammo prices.
Thanks for your help |

Which fits YOUR hand better? The Glock does FOR ME, but you need to find out for YOU.

As the others mentioned, find what fits your hand. I personally prefer Glocks over XDs but I own both.

Personally, I find the Glock pistol to be a better choice for any of the action pistol sports. It’s got a lower bore axis, a much shorter and smoother trigger reset, and better magazines.
Anyone can teach himself how to repair his own Glock; and, the wide variety of, both, factory and aftermarket Glock parts and accessories never ceases to amaze me! Just about any Glock pistol modification you can imagine is waiting for you out there. The XD has too many, ‘bells and whistles’ for my liking; and, I know from experience that XD parts are always a problem. XD’s are, also, required to be returned to the factory for any and all service, too. What is more Springfield, still, hasn’t got their Melonite/Parkerized finish quite right, yet, either. My own choice for a first 9x19 would be the Glock Model G-17 fitted with aftermarket night sights and a 3.5# connector. True, I don’t prefer the 9mm for self-defense; but, properly stoked and setup, I’d be comfortable using a 9mm if I really had to. The way I see it, the big advantage to using a 9mm isn't the low cost of the ammunition; instead, it's the 9x19's widespread availability - an attribute it shares with Glock pistols and parts! PS: While you're at it don't forget to take a look at the Glock Model G-34, too. It's an excellent range and shooting event pistol. (Stay away from open slides and porting!)

I also agree with the "Glock is already mainstream available and thoroughly debugged; XD not yet" line.
Go to a range and rent them both. If you go to several ranges and none of them rent the XD, that fact alone should tell you something. |

Both fine pistols. My son carrys an XD9...I carry a Glock 19 (much of the time). As to 9mm versus any other caliber, I feel 9mm is as prolific, if not more so, than any other caliber. It's adequate to get the job done.

No matter how many times you ask this question...you will get every answer from buy A pistol over B pistol. Based on your two choices...it's a toss up and all boils down to personal preference. Asking someone to recommend a weapon is silly on your part...because people will tell you what they like...that doesn't mean that you will like what you buy. You need to make your own mind up and ask what you want from the pistol...what you are going to use the pistol for. It's your money, so you must decide what you want.
Outside of Glocks being durable...I personally dislike Glocks...never owned a good shooting Glock...I'm sure the Glock fan club will write a book as to why Glocks are the cat's meow...save your time...I've owned enough Glocks to know better than to listen to those claims. |

Wait a minute! Sometimes, people will tell you, BOTH, what they like as well as, ‘Why’ they like it. (That’s not a bad thing, right!) Years ago, when I was out on the street buying my first guns, I made a lot of silly mistakes: I bought guns I never should have owned; and I sold guns that I definitely should have hung onto. Problem was that, ‘Big Al’ hadn’t invented the internet, yet; and I had a lot of trouble trying to figure things out for myself. There’s nothing wrong with asking someone else for advice; (or, even, what they like) the real, ‘art’ lies in being mature enough and smart enough to be able to ferret out the most practical truths from everything that comes back at you! It’s been my general experience that people tend to talk themselves into their own mistakes. I mean, once you own it, you’ve got ‘a learn to love it – right! Whatever faults the Glock design has, (and it has them) inherent accuracy ain’t one of them. That’s something I’d blame on, either, the shooter or the ammunition. Marksmanship, like many other things, is a dynamic combination of, both, the pistol AND the shooter. Timing is, also, a factor: Sometimes you have a good day and hit everything you point at; and, sometimes, you just can’t seem to get your act together. (That’s, ‘What’ dry-firing is for!) It might be a good idea for this shooter to go over to, ‘The Firing Line’ in Whitehall Township and rent several different pistols before he buys. He might surprise us, all, and come back with one of the SIG’s. http://www.pleoafiringline.com/Firing-Line.html
