I am also right handed and left eye dominate, when shooting a pistol I find that I just bring the gun over to my left slightly and also tilt my head slightly. Some people have problems seeing double when looking at the sights. If you have that problem try putting a small peice of scotch tape on the lens of you non dominate eye, just enough to obscure the sights.
There are also threads covering this at brianenos.com. There are some top shooters that also are cross dominate it is not a handicap you just have to find the best way to deal with it that works for you.

Me three... I do the same. I pull the pistol over to the left slightly when I shoot. I usually shoot pistol with both eyes open.
When I shoot my rifle though I need to wear an eye patch so I'm forced to use my right eye.

I also am left eye dominant, because i lost the sight in my right eye. I didn't actually lose it totally, but it is very bad. I had a detached retina. I shoot both eyes open for pistol, but try to leave the gun in the center of my stance. As for rifle, I shoot left handed now. It's really very easy to do when you HAVE to do it. I am just about as quick on the draw with a rifle(say pulling up on a running deer) as i was right handed. I can shoot shotgun both left and right-handed, but i also shoot these both eyes open.

I am in the same boat. I turn my head slightly. If you can shoot with both eyes open then all the better. Just remember, when in a hurry, go for the FRONT sight first or only (if it comes to it). Also remember that when talking gun, EVERYBODY is an expert and will have a different opinion. An open mind works best.
I like larger calibers for concealed carry b/c I am a freak who doesn't fully trust hollow-point in semi-autos (no matter the price of the weapon). I like hollow-point in the pipe and ball ammo for f/u. I know that I have just stepped on a proverbial land-mine here but this is just my opinion, for me alone and not for gospel. As long as you are comfortable with the gun and the caliber then that is all that counts. (for the record though, I do like an old quote from one of the gun mags, that said that the .380 is a popular carry carry caliber not because people like it but rather because people compromised and settled on it). Good Luck! |

Full Isosceles stance. Both eyes open.
It takes a while for some people to learn to shoot with both eyes open, but it should be even for either eye. A piece of tape over the non dominant eye can help you train your vision. I used to squint the non dominant eye for about a year until my brain became trained. Lycanriflesaredifferentandyouneedtoshootlefthanded thrope

I am in this Boat - Right Handed / Left -eye dominate.
I took a basic Pistol Class awhile back with the FIRE Institute. I was tilting my head and closing my right eye. Tony F. explained that it is better to "turn" not "tilt" your head to the right. By keeping your head straight and tunning the weak eye away, You actually bring your Dominate Eye over to the front Site. My accuracy improved tremulously. I hope I explained that O.K.? Anyhow it works for me - maybe give it a try?

Somebody will need to correct me. I'm having one of those "I can see it but not say it" moments. We often came upon this issue as small arms instructors in the Navy. We used a technique called "Cirillo" (Spelling) where both eyes were open, but you focused on the sides of the weapon...no sights. This was only for CQB drills during SSEW/SSET courses, watchstander quals, and such....not for marksmanship (Medal qualification).
It was a long time ago.....I know some of you have to know what I'm trying to remember...meanwhile, I'll do some research and try to jumpstart myself. I do remember it helped out quite a few mates. |
