Default Best pistol(s) chambered for .40 S&W

When it comes to the .45, the M1911 is a tried and true design and there are many good manufacturers out there.

For the 9mm Para, there are also many "classic" designs and manufacturers that have stood the test of time-- the Browning/FN Hi-Power being the classic SA 9mm, the Berretta 92 being one of a couple "modern classics" for the 9mm round.

For the .380, there's the Walther PPK and the newer Sig P230/232.

But the .40 S&W is a much newer round by comparison, so I can't really think of a "classic" .40 S&W weapon.

So what are your thoughts on the best pistols chambered for .40 S&W, some that will someday be considered "classic" .40 pistols (if they aren't already)?

Please provide both a full-frame and compact make/model.

Both H&K and the Springfield XDs have full sized and compact .40sw as do Glock.

Yes, I suppose the S&W 4006 would be a "classic" .40 cal pistol. Thanks for the info, as I've always been (perhaps unfairly) suspicious of S&W's ability to manufacture a reliable and accurate auto.

Can't say it would be the best but I bet it would be the one with the most weight to lug around.

Out of the three 40s that I have owned and sold, the only one I replaced was the Sig P229!

I have two in .40 S&W but I doubt that either will be a "classic".

What, no P99/P99c fans in here? Comes in both fullsize and compact.
