You have several ways of doing this.. Most typically someone either buys a tricked out model and shoots it right out of the box. ...or they buy a budget model and build it up.
Any one of the makes will work, depending on your $$$, what you expect out of the piece, and overall quality. You can build up a $300 Rock Island into a race gun. Or dish out $3000 for something that functionally is the same - but maybe tighter clearances and better finish. The first thing you want to consider is how much do you have or want to spend. |

Check out the Taurus PT1911...a lot of gun for a good price! (They can be had for under $500)

Along with 1911s you may want to check out the Sig 220 Super Match, it's quite a shooter.
If your looking for a target only gun, almost any 1911 will do as a range gun, if you're actually looking to shoot bullseye or something, I'd recommned a higher grade gun, with a Sig GSR TTT , Colt Gold Cup , or Kimber Gold Match as a minimum, those are about 1K and you can go all they way up to 3K+ if you get into full blown customs like Les Baer, Wilson Combat, or Nighthawk Custom. It all really depends on what you want to do with it, if your just looking for something to have fun with the range, I wouldn't rec. a .45ACP, the ammo is just getting to pricey, if you reload, all the more power to ya. For just a range gun, I'd look at the Rock Island guns, the Springfield Milspec and Loaded models which should be between $450-$800 or The Sig XO 1911 being around $850, with basic Kimbers floating in the range of $700-$800. Personally, if I were looking for nice target only gun, I'd get a Sig 226 X5 SAO in 9mm / or a long-slide Glock in 9mm with a Ghost trigger kit for a lot less $$$ Then there's the world of wide body tricked out race guns....I'm sure Lycan will be around later to give info on custom STIs and such.

Thank you for the replys. I was thinking a 1911 because I have owned a springfield before and it performed very well and fit my large hand great. I realize the ammo cost is high as I do not reload. I would not object to a 9mm. My price range is not more than $1000.00. I was looking to buy this week. I will probably check a few shops around the area starting Thursday or Friday.

In .45, for a base gun ANY Kimber will shoot tight. They all have basically the same barrels. The Springfield Loaded is also a great buy. LycanI'mtemptedforanotherSTIthrope

The STI makes a damn good prodcut, I've been eyeballing a Ranger II for a while now, I just wish I could find one in stock to look over prior to ordering.
