Default Ranges in Holmesburg/Torresdale

For years in the Holmesburg area I've been hearing what I swear sounds like a shooting range somewhere between Torresdale ave & the river (near that big comcast relay station, the one with the tall tower & flashing light). I recently moved into the area and now I hear it ALL THE TIME, in fact, I can hear it as I type this at 10pm...

I know there's an indoor range on Blakiston st. (that I generally refuse to use due to an interesting experience I had there) but I can't imagine it operating this late.... I also know they train prison personnel at Holmesburg prison, but I can't picture them shooting that much, all day and into the evening...

Anyone else in the area know what the hell I'm hearing, and if it is a range... is it open to the public?

You're hearing the Philadelphia Police Academy Range. It's a restricted range for police use only, and is open until 11PM. Interestingly enough, adjoining the police range is Holmesburg Fish and Game, which is at State Road and Pennypack Street. I don't know what their hours are, but the website I linked to above should tell you.

Default Re: Ranges in Holmesburg/Torresdale

seems it could be both:

HF&G:

All Ranges are Open...
Sat through Mon 7am to 11pm and
Tue through Fri 5pm to 11pm
in addition, The rifle range is open for pistol and rifle shooting
everyday from 7am - 11pm EXCEPT Friday from 7am - 5pm

PPA:

The Firearms Training Unit is situated on the grounds of the Philadelphia Police Academy, 8501 State Road and maintains four (4) ranges.

Range # 1 is a 50 yard, 50 position firing range. This range is equipped with a stadium type lighting system for night shooting. It is the largest of the 4 ranges.

Range # 2 is a 50 yard, 20 position firing range. This range is also equipped with a stadium type lighting system for night shooting.

Range # 3 is a 200 yard, 8 position, multi-purpose range that is used largely by the S.W.A.T. Unit. It's length accommodates rifle training, while intermediate target stands, at 50 and 100 yards, accommodate handgun, shotgun and sub-machine gun.

Range # 4 is a 25 yard, 10 position firing range. This range has a "low light" lighting system. A Hogan's Alley and Running Man target system will be operational in the near future on Range # 4.

They do a looooooot of shootin' at that police range than. Its good to know our taxpayer dollars are going towards something useful like LEO target practice. Maybe now they can stop accidentally hitting people... heh

Philadelphia Prisons system train at Holmesburg Fish and Game Range also, although I don't believe they are there in the evenings.
