Thumbs down Gun turn-in on Father's Day

Quote:
PARKSIDE - June 19, 2009 - (WPVI) -- It's an unconventional way to the celebrate Father's Day.

But one that is likely to have an impact on the community.

Local and state leaders announced the "Save a Father or Son on Father's Day" gun turn-in.

The announcement was made the at the Salute to Fatherhood Mural in North Philadelphia.

The turn-in will happen Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at 4950 Parkside Avenue in the Parkside section of Philadelphia.

''Groceries for Guns'' Turn-In Event is Saturday in West Phila.

Saying they are sickened by recent gun violence in the city, community activists and business owners were preparing to host another gun turn-in event in West Philadelphia on Saturday -- the day before Father's Day.

The organizers on Friday made their announcement in North Philadelphia, in front of the "Salute to Fatherhood" mural at Broad Street and Glenwood Avenue.

The event will be at 4950 Parkside Avenue, the office of state senator Vincent Hughes (D-Phila.), on Saturday from 10am to 3pm on Saturday.

Jeff Brown's family owns 11 Shop Rite supermarkets in Philadelphia:

"Our Shop Rites will fund a $100 Shop Rite gift card for every gun that is turned into the Philadelphia Police Department tomorrow. They can immediately redeem that gift card for something positive -- a meal for their family. We will take every gun that comes in."

And Brown says they'll provide gift cards for every gun that's turned in to police on Saturday, regardless of whether it's at the West Philadelphia event (no questions asked).

Bilal Abdul Qayyum, of the Philadelphia Father's Day Rally Committee, says this program does work:

"A young woman found a gun in her house. She knew it wasn't hers -- it was her 16-year-old son that had it, who shouldn't have had it. She turned it in."

Vernon (no last name given) from North Philadelphia thinks the event is a good idea:

"We have young kids growing up around here getting shot, and lot of guns in people's houses. So it really affects a lot of people around here."

LOL. I like your thinking. You may be able to pick up a nice piece for dirt cheap. The police may have a problem with other purchasers crashing their party though.

Wow, I always wondered if any of these people know they are getting seriously ripped off. Some of em anyway.

I need to save up some dough and head down to one of these and buy em up on the side. I think I would get thrown out, hassled, or arrested.
Arent these things usually hosted by police or at least has a cop or two?

No they are hosted by anti-crime/drug groups...the police just take the firearms and destroy them...no questions asked. So you could is essence go on a shooting spree before one of these vents and turn the weapon in....classic.

It's 100% pure profit if the guns are stolen. Assuming no questions are asked, $100 beats risking arrest trying to sell it to a reputable shop for $400.

I still think someone should contact the AG's office - illegal transfer of handguns. The police have to follow the rules like the rest of us.

I have my rifle. Do you?

As a man thats had his father's guns passed down to him, this pisses me off a great deal, i know it would of certainly pissed my Father off. I dont like how they used Fathers Day as a sort of gimmick/catchy title for their little useless event. They could of picked a "regular" day of the year.

I say fuck em
