Here's another article:

http://www.philly.com/philly/news/br..._incident.html

Quote:
At the same time, Durante moved to revoke DePaul's permit to carry a concealed firearm because, he said, carrying a firearm on any county trail or in its parks is illegal.
Uh, since when?

Quote:
Ferman advised: "If someone is on the trail and witnesses an incident or anything that appears suspicious, I strongly encourage them to contact police immediately."

Durante recommended carrying a cell phone from which to call authorities.
Because that'll save your life.

umm, yes. dont get me wrong, if he shot while they were attacking, fine. but shooting at fleeing suspects is not self defense. it is assault and if he hit one of those kids he would be charged with murder.

Here's more coverage:

http://www.philly.com/philly/wires/a...efiredgun.html

In this one they say he was carrying lawfully, which contradicts the sheriff's statement that carrying in a county park is illegal.

Quote:
Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman says Joseph James DePaul Jr. was carrying the gun lawfully. But she said Thursday that the 27-year-old Norristown man shouldn't have fired it at the juveniles who knocked him off his bicycle Wednesday evening. Neither teen was hit by the gunfire.
And another article, not much new in it though:

Angry Re: Bike trail of fears.

FFS people! Since when do we treat what is in a news story as gospel. The kids may have been 25' away and some douche made a typo. Who says he admitted they were riding away? Could it not be inaccurate? Why don't we hold off on the proclimations about how stupid he is and how much of a menace he is until we know the full story and have some solid details? WTF?!?!

I sent an e-mail this afternoon to the writer / reporter of the Inquirer article:

Liz Wagner;

While I do not know what actually happened in the incident that is the subject of your article I can tell you with utmost certainty that the following statement attributed to Sheriff John P. Durante in your article is absolutely FALSE and incorrect. It is totally legal for any law abiding citizen to open carry and handgun or a citizen with a valid license to carry a firearm (LTCF) to carry a handgun concealed in any state, local or municipal parks or trails.

“At the same time, Durante moved to revoke DePaul's permit to carry a concealed firearm because, he said, carrying a firearm on any county trail or in its parks is illegal.”

The fact that the Sheriff so blatantly misstated this critical fact somewhat calls into question what else may have been misstated regarding this matter.

I do not know Mr. DePaul in any way and certainly do not condone any type of illegal activity that might have taken place in this matter.

I do hope that you and The Philadelphia Inquirer will quickly correct this critical factual error.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
my signature and address

This incident is real frustrating in that it just provides ammunition to the anti crowd including certain members of the law enforcement community who do not really support or 2nd amendment rights either.

I hope that it tuns out that the details are not a reported but I think that this g mayhav messed up badly.

Just a minor correction - OC in state parks is illegal.

Rep incoming for your efforts.

Ummm, yea (maybe a nitpick) but an important one, OC is NOT legit in STATE parks, LTCF or not, AND LTCF is required OC or CC in the municipality of Philadelphia.

ETA: Alright, I was typing but I'll underline the second point because it is a separate matter
