Default Fun and games in Philly this weekend

Friday

* 9:30 p.m.: Two unidentified men forced their way into a home on Frontenac Street near Stanwood, in Northeast Philadelphia.

A 38-year-old man was knocked from his wheelchair as the suspects demanded money and jewelry, Officer Christine O'Brien said.

The men fled with $95 and two cell phones. The victim and his 65-year-old mother were not injured, O'Brien said.

Saturday

* 4:45 a.m.: Two women were unharmed when two men burst into their home on Ditman Street near Princeton Avenue, in Tacony. The suspects, one of whom had a gun, had knocked on the victims' door. Once inside, they took cell phones, cash, jewelry and prescription medications, then fled.

A short time later, officers observed the suspects driving a car near Tilton and Richmond streets. A chase ensued and one of the suspects, identified as a 16-year-old boy, was arrested. His alleged accomplice is still at large.

* 8:30 a.m.: A brazen robber made off with $40,000 from an Olney check-cashing store. The unidentified man followed an employee into the Money Mart on Broad Street near Olney Avenue and forced him into the back of the store at gunpoint, O'Brien said. A scuffle ensued.

The 22-year-old employee was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center with head and stomach injuries; the suspect is still at large, O'Brien said.

* 9:38 a.m.: A gruesome discovery along the Schuylkill - an employee of the Water Department, cleaning near Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Strawberry Mansion Drive, saw a body in the river.

The police Marine Unit recovered a decomposed body of unknown race and gender, wrapped in plastic.

Homicide detectives were awaiting a ruling from the medical examiner on a cause of death before proceeding with the investigation.

* 6:30 p.m.: An unidentified man was shot once in the back on 22nd Street near Sigel, in Point Breeze.

He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was listed in critical condition.

Detectives didn't disclose a motive for the shooting and had made no arrests as of yesterday afternoon.

* 9:30 p.m.: A 28-year-old man was shot in the mouth on Germantown Avenue near Glenwood, in North Philadelphia, in what police believe was a robbery attempt, although it was unclear if anything was taken. The victim was taken to Temple University Hospital and is listed in serious condition.

Yesterday

* 1:22 a.m.: Three people were shot at 6th and Tioga streets, in North Philadelphia, and were rushed to Temple University Hospital, O'Brien said.

A 19-year-old man was shot in the arm and was listed in stable condition. A 20-year-old woman was shot in the back, and a 26-year-old was shot three times in the shoulder and twice in the ear; both were listed in critical condition, O'Brien said.

* 1:44 a.m.: A 27-year-old man was stabbed six times in the back on Pike Street near Frankford Avenue, in Juniata Park, O'Brien said.

Police had no information on a motive or a suspect. The victim was listed in critical condition at Hahnemann University Hospital last night.

* Shortly before 4 a.m.: An unidentified man in his 30s was shot three times in the arm and multiple times in the chest on William Street near Park Avenue, in North Philadelphia. He was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital at 4:10 a.m.

I lived outside of Philadelphia while I was going to Temple, and took the R6 SEPTA train in.. Some of those neighborhoods you walked through to get to the campus from the train platform were a little shady. Never had any problems though, and most times there were a fair number of people going the same direction... that being said, I was on guard the occasions when I was walking around there really early in the morning and late at night.

I grew up in S.W. Philly and had a great childhood but I would never raise my daughter there now. It is a shame because there are still some good people in the city but the thugs have taken over. At some point the residents need to take their neighborhoods back.

Except for the one description "Northeast" all of the places mentioned are ones that you never have to visit.
