I agree that a stolen or lost gun should be reported ASAP, so I can't say that I would want that bill to fail. Any responsible gun owner with half a brain would report a gun stolen as soon as realizing it.
The point is it makes US...the victim of a crime, a criminal if you fail to realize you have a missing firearm and fail to report it within 24 hours.

In addition remedies already exist in PA law, under the negligence statutes (Title 18, sections 302-306), that provide for enforcement in these areas. There is NO reason to for this legislation UNLESS you want to expand the intrusion of government into the lives of otherwise law abiding citizens who are exercising their rights.

Congrats to all who e-mailed and contacted your reps.....big pat on the back for a job well done! We made Rendell look like a smacked ass.

It did not pass, it was tabled for further amendments to be voted on again.

Which really... is that a bad thing?
It didn't pass, it was tabled for further amendment and later votes.

And it is a bad thing. It seems ok at first glance but it is ripe for abuse and will do nothing to stop crime.

you have to be careful. if you misplace a gun and call it in lost then two weeks later you find it, now they have your information. so when the all out ban comes they know where to go... i think its just too much information in the wrong hands. this bill can and will lead to many draconian bills to come...if passed.

If you are in the habit of "misplacing" your guns, you probably shouldn't own one anyway. I did say RESPONSIBLE gun owners.

It's not making us a victim, and it's not just as simple as..."24 hours". If you go on vacation, and come back a week later, they aren't going to arrest you for not reporting it. It's not how it works.

However, if they make it into law that you have a time limit to do so, it could turn you into a guilty party if you were away from home for whatever reason, business, travel, etc. You know damn well that if a crime was committed with a stolen gun, and they traced it to you as being the owner, they'd throw the book first and not listen to any reasons why you didn't report it, even if you were not home and were ignorant of the fact.

And then would come legal battles, spending ridiculous amounts of money, trying to clear your name, most likely the rest of your guns confiscated, not being able to purchase more during the case, license revoked, etc.
I disagree with this interpretation of the 24 hour rule, but generally agree.
