Default Best Mount and combat scope for an AK

This was touched on but it died out and no one was real specific on any answers.

So, if anyone can suggest......
the best mounting location,
type of mount for a scope,
and a good "two eyes open" red dot system (that isn't a small fortune)
for an AK that I am turning into a nice "Black Rifle", I would love to hear from you all.

I have read that a scope on the dust cover is too heavy. Is this true?

Is the Picanny (spelling) type of railing the best way to mount? Isn't that over the dust cover again?

Next PAFOA shoot is coming and I want to try and have my toy all dressed for the shoot.

you have 3 main ways of mounting a scope red dot.
use the actual Scope mount system that is embedded onto your reciever of the ak. This is the "box" looking metal piece on the left hand side. This is the most secure and were a scope was originally designed to go. I have my scope mounted from this location. the example given is a tri-rail. The one i have is specificly meant for a scope, as my mount at rings and not rails.

If you get a front handguard set with picatiny rails on the top and bottom. Then you can mount small red dot. on it. Iv seen a few have it like this.

The WORST location, is a dusk cover with rails. pretty simply as to why, the dust cover can tend to slightly wobble and it is really not secured down tight, the only thing holding it is the back end of the spring button. that right there would turn me off from the rail cover.

for all your ak needs.....

best site ever.

and if you a bigger guy, like i am. Get the SAW pistol grip for $20 tapco makes. Counts as a US part and its much easier on the grip for larger hands.

hope this info helps

I would suggest an Aimpoint micro T-1 on an UltiMAK.

Yes, the ultimak and aimpoint on an AK go together like "peas and carrots".

If $$$ is an issue and you need to economize, look for a used Comp M2 which will save you quite a few bucks. IMHO the ultimak is the only practical means of mounting an optic on an AK. I'll bring mine to the September shoot.

Thumbs up Re: Best Mount and combat scope for an AK

For an AK - without sinking a ton o' cash - that will get the job done, and give you a GOOD amount of eye relief, I would suggest, one of these;

Rugged, dependable, no rocket science involved, and I just HAPPEN to know, where a SPANKIN' new-in-the-box-still model, is available! Only $150 shipped, no less - comes with the cantilever mount, resin, battery, lens wipe, hex wrench, and instructions! Just drop me a PM.

Personally, on an AK it's irons only for me. XS sight systems has come out with a big dot sight for the AK which is awesome.

My personal opinion aside, the ultimak/aimpoint combination co-witnessed with the sights is the only way to go for reflex optics on the AK. Although i prefer the EOtech as an optic, the aimpoint is the only one which will co-witness.

I like the Kobra sighrt on an AK and when mounted it just seems to "belong there".

It comes with it's own side rail mount which is the best you can get on an AK.

It allows both eyes open shooting.

Has selectable reticles.

It's accurate for the Kobras and AKs intended purpose.

It returns (or pretty darn close) to zero if removed and mounted again.

They are relatively cheap (my last one was ~ $150 but that was a few years back) maybe $200-$225 now complete with mount, battery and case?

Does this scope allow me to "Witness" (I guess that is what it is called. When you can use your iron sights thru the scope. That is what is meant by this term isn't it?) if it is mounted on this site rail. http://www.ultimak.com/m2-b.htm
