for the price, there are so many better options. for 98$ thats the last thing i would pick IMO. Why buy something thats only half the front furniture.
If your really set to put a red dot on the front furniture, mind you it makes the ak very front heavy(iv tried a red dot in that location), i would go with this model, but again, just my opinion.

If you want something that solid metal, this is were its at.
I just feel that model you are looking at is a touch pricey for just the top gas block.

That unit might offer more flexibility but I still maintain the ultimak is the superior optics mounting alternative because its rail is positioned lower to the bore line than the copes unit.

The "drop at comb" of the AK stock was dimensioned for iron sights. As such, any mounting option that placers the optic higher than the iron sights will begin to present cheekweld problems. Granted it's a matter of degree because even the ultimak puts the optic on a somewhat higher plane but AFAIK it's the "lowest" mounting option currently available.

The copes unit appears to put the optic at least 3/4 + inches higher than the ultimak. The rail on the ultimak is actually belowe the plane of the iron sights whereas the plane of the copes appears to be on the same plane as the irons if not a tad higher.

ultimak

copes

The cheekweld issue is the reason the OEM com bloc side rail optics mount is THE absolute worst option as it places optics well above the plane of the irons sights.

This guy doesn't have a cheekweld, he has a chinweld.

And again I learn something.

See, I never would have taken the height of the mount into consideration. But once Tony explained that, it does make a lot of sense. I guess that the Ultimax may cost a bit more, but actually it puts the scope a bit cloer to where I am going to acutually use it effieciently. I wonder if this will allow me to witness with the SPOT Scope on it. We'll have to wait and see.

OK, then it looks like the Ultimax mount will be ordered Friday.

I'm buying the scope off of War Wagon. If for some reason, it isn't what I wanted, or if it makes the AK to front heavy. I will throw it on the Mini -14 for fun. But from what I have read up on it. I think it will be fine.

I just love this site. Keep it up guys. One day, I'll know what I'm talking about again thanks to all of you.

ah that is a great point man! you are right in every way about the line of sight.
When i originally gave examples of different styles, i was just doing general searches to show him the various places to mount a scope. gasblock/dust rail/reciever.
Ultimac have top quality products, cant go wrong with them, sorry i did not show an example of one.
However given that the gas block can be removed there is a slight chance your dot/scope could come off center.
I still recomend the most solid mount is still based off the flat receiver, where it was originally intended. Which is where i have mine located. Its solid and unmoving, if you look around you can find mounts that are on par with the irons. I actually found a very similar version to the one i have.
http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/media/xmtk75_001.JPG
its great in the fact that it leaves the irons open slightly at the bottom, if needed, plus the scope is just right above and very close to the line of sight of the irons leaving a excilent cheak weld.

When i was looking for inspiration on what to do with my ak, i got alot of viewing tips from this site, actually this is the exact front furniture and VG....

and as to your question about "duracoat", yes its very easy to learn. I never airbrushed before in my life, purchased the paint/starter airbrush/cans of propellant. hooked it up, cleaned the metal, sprayed it on, and it looks butterrrrrr.

Whats good and bad about duracoat is its very user friendly, lots of colors, very strong, and does not need to be baked.
Down side, you have to wait 1 month before using the firearm.
Heh, small price to pay so i dont have to put it in my oven to bake unlike some other firearm finishes.
I also hear "Durell's"(spelling?) is very good?

If you are considering a "Scope" for your front furniture and not a "red dot" im almost positive you are going to find it will be front heavy. You would want to keep the scope as close to the center of balance as possible.

here is anouther great site with alot of info.

I'm getting this sight off of War Wagon.

http://www.mountsplus.com/miva/merch...OT/SPO-MK3-NR6

I don't think it will be to heave mounted up front, on the Ulitmax Sight rail.

The Aimpoint Micro T-1 weighs less than 4 ounces including the integrated Picatinny mount.

Thumbs up Re: Best Mount and combat scope for an AK

Actually, I'm looking at an UltiMAK ad, from the most recent Shotgun News "Best of" compilation, and in the ad, it SHOWS an AK, with a red dot mounted on their rail & over the gas tube, basically! Again, the 1x nature of Aimpoints, S.P.O.T.s, et.al., is that it DOES allow you to mount THAT far forward, if you like. Being nearsighted, even though corrected to 20/20, I like MY Red Dots a little bit closer, but to each his own.

Some time back i saw a mount for the AK that placed the optics above teh dust cover, and was mounted between the grip and receiver.

Spendy, but looked solid and like a good idea.

If anyone has a link on them, LMK.
