Given the limited effective range of a pistol caliber carbine a red dot is a good choice. They lend themselves to quick target aquisition and both eyes open shooting. Any dot strong enough to handle rifle recoil will work.
I would go with either a Tasco, Barska, or Tru Glo red dot and keep your costs down. Stay away from BSA. I have a pretty basic red/green Tru Glo dot on my AR15 and it has withstood a few thousand rounds without losing zero or having any problems. Battery life has been good too. This is the one I have been using without issue. http://www.truglo.com/content/produc...eddot_dual.asp I think it was $50. When I move to an Aimpoint & magnifier setup on the AR. This red dot will most likely find itself on my 995. |

if you like the looks of the aimpoints i would check out a company called Primary Arms. they offer very good quality clones. they also have very good customer service. they are priced very reasonably as well.

have any of you heard of a CenterPoint 1x34mm Quick Aim Sight? I found one at dicks sports for $50. It seems like a decent low cost scope.

Have you looked into a Bushnell. I have a couple Trophy Hunter 3x9's. One mounted on a Browning A-bolt .30-06 and another mounted on a Rem.700BDL 7mm mag, both of which have been good scopes. I reciently aquired a Bushnell Trophy red dot model 73-0134 to mount on a Ruger 10/22, and it looks like a good solid scope for the price. It's labeled as a handgun/shotgun sight, however it mounted nicely on the 10/22 with Weaver rail. I liked it enough to buy another off Amazon.com for mounting on one of my HiPoint TS995's. Of course it's not a long range scope, however for out to 100yds, it seems it'll work nicely. The price on Amazon was just right around $82.00 including shipping.

Dick's has a Tru-Glo RED/GREEN dot that is 2x for about $75. I have a 1x Tru-Glo on my AK and it works just fine. I was thinking of getting the 2x for the AK and putting my 1x on my 995. 2x is still easy enough to keep both eyes open.

Thanks for posting that. Checked it out and the more I thought about it, the more I told myself it's just $20.00.
Well I ended up ordering two, and they should be here in about a week or so. |

good luck with the sights. I ended up getting a truglo red/green dot for 50 bucks and its one of the best dot sights I've seen. very accurate at 25 and 50 yards.
thanks for all the suggestions

Like I said, I have a couple Bushnell Trophy series red dot, (73-0134) at a cost of around $81-$85. They have four different red dot sights. A small dot, a larger dot, about a 1" circle with dot inside and a cross hairs. There is also an intensity reostat between 0,(off) and 10. it's only one power with a 28mm lens, which is very good for up to 50 yards. For the price, it's a nice scope, and has about a 3" eye relief, and it looks good on the 995.
Now on the other hand, someone posted about a Barska from Buds Gun Shop for only $19.59. Even though I have no need, I ordered two of these. The reason was, a guy at work said he had a Barska on his AR, and it has been working pretty good. Although it was not a red dot, and not this model, I took his word, and for $20, what the heck. I spend more than that on beer in a week. It's a one power but has a 50mm lens. That's pretty big, but then again, it would give a pretty wide view, and maybe enough to shoot with both eyes open. We will see, as I have two of these coming, and should be here tommorow. Just wait, a bit and I'll give a recap on the Barska. |
