Don't have anything Leupold, but the Konus, Kowa, Nikon spotting scopes are very nice.

If you are going to use it on a bench, then one of the straight type spotting scopes work nice. I have a Burris 20-60x80mm that is super.

However, if you plan on shooting from some place other than the bench, get one of the angled eye piece scopes. It makes it much easier to see through the scope from the sitting or prone position. The straight can certainly be used in these positions, but the angled eye piece makes it easier to do without "loosing" your position.

I have the Pentax PF-80ED-A, the optical quality is among the best, and the price is smaller. I also bought the 7X eyepiece which kicks it up to 74X.

If I want to see .223 bullet holes in a target at 100 yards, would I need a spotting scope that goes to 45x max magnification, or one that goes all the way to 60x max magnification? An added element to this is that the 45x scope has a 60 mm objective and the 60x scope has an 80 mm objective. I'd be using a Leupold with 45 degree angled eyepiece, target shooting from a covered bench rest at an outdoor rifle range in heat, cold, etc.

You don't need 45x to see 223 holes at 100 yards. You should be able to see them up to 300 yards, but most people who use spotting scopes past 300 yards are using it to estimate mirage.

What the Aub said! A friend has a mid range Kowa, all he uses is the 25x eyepiece. Plenty o' mag to see 22 or 223 holes @ 100 yds and 223 @ 200.

@ 100 yards, 15x will allow you to clearly see and differentiate .223 holes from shadows. More power = less field of view but better clarity. I got the "Winchester" brand a few years ago for $200 {15-45x, 80mm objective} and it is clear enough for ground hogs up to 300 yards.

Best regards,
chalmitch

best bang for the buck... Not sure I would agree... Nikon makes you pay top dollar for there stuff... if you got the money its the way to go...

I was looking at the Leupold Sequia(spell?) Green Ring.... it was the 15x45-60... for 275..

Ended up getting the bushnell 20x60-60 legend for 249 shipped with a tripod...

You really need to look for yourslef thru them.. I went to the store interested in the leupold but left liking the bushnell legend better...
