you have 3 main ways of mounting a optic,
a. use the actual scope mount located on the side of your reciever(the little metal box thing on the left side), but this would also require you to buy any ak scope mount. this is the best way, and most solid.

b. mount a scope of your top reciever dust cover. this is the cover you take off to clean the inside guts. You can find optic rails pre-mounted on dust covers that you can buy. This is not so stable, as you know there is no real "locking "feature with the dust cover, not counting the lil hole that fits withthe spring to secure it down.

c. you can purchase a new front handguard that has got rails on the rop and bottom pieces. this is stable, yet this will also make your front end heavy.

Id go with option A to be legit

As Drak said the side rail mount is the best way to go....but...are you sure you want to mount a scope? Red dots or even better the Kobra style red dot (what Russia actually intended to be mounted on the AK) is a far better option IMO. I had a scope for an AK many years ago...it pretty much sucked...I think I took the scope off and shot at it if I remember right. A Kobra however, different story. My AKs with Kobras are really fun and functional weapons that hold their own.

You can put a scope on an AK but it would be pretty far down on my list of rifles to put a scope on.

I have a WASR 10 with a POSP (Russian military spec) 2.5-5x scope mounted.

I can make it do 2MOA (2inches at 100, 1 at 50) 10 shot groups without using a bench.

That's some mighty good shooting Winterborn, especially for an AK.....many bolt action guys have difficulty doing that from a bench.

Today was a really good day for me.

And sitting with an AK is easier than a bench, in my experience. All I have are 30round mags, and if the mag is in contact with the bench when the gun goes off the harmonics get jacked up and kick the bullet way high.

Cant find the link now, but I have seen a scope mount for the AK that mounts between the pistol grip and reciever, adn wraps around the reciever. Lets you install optics without modifying the reciever, and keeps a zero unlike the cover mounts.

Sounds like a good idea, never tried it.

I have a Dust cover Scope and a Forward mount on my SAR 2 AK and I can slip my cheap-o tactical scope on the dust cover rail and hit 300 yard steel plates with it. Mine has 2 hex head screws on the rear of the cover to lock in down combine that with my Blackjack buffer it has not lost zero yet.

I use the forward mount wiht a red-dot and shoot over the dust cover rails.

Just my $.02
