I have a Leupold Mark 4 item number 54680. But instead of saying mark 4 on the box it says, " VARI-X III 6.5-20x50mm, Long Range M1, Matte, Tactical." On the objective it says LEUPOLD VARI-X III 6.5-20x50mm LONG RANGE TACTICAL. Did Leupold Sell the Mark 4's as vari-x III with M1 turrets and SF prior to giving them the Mark 4 Name? Hope somebody can clear up my confusion...

Archer is right, the scope shouldn't have the gold ring. The 2 scopes that you are talking about are actually quite different. They have different ranges of adjustment, different turrets, different glass, etc. I have known of some guys that did like the use the Vari-x III LR's if they couldn't afford the Mark 4's. Either way, they are not the same scope, I hope you didn't get screwed.

Is not a gold ring vari-x 3 and has M1 Target turrets and the box has the same product number as the current Mark 4 LR/T 6.5-20x50mm. And to my knowledge non of the Vari-x III scopes have a Mil-dot reticle

Thats true, I've not found a VX-III to have a mil dot, they do come with a target dot. But you said on the scope it reads VX III right? I dunno, with it reading VX III on the scope but the product number says its a Mark 4? thats just screwy.

I don't know either hence this thread. Came from Leupold and has the hunting & shooting sports heritage fund logo on the box and has all the warranty info and manual stuff from Leopold

Can you post pics of the scope and box, especially the scope and where it says vari x III. Just because the scope has a mil dot, doesn't mean he couldn't have sent the scope back and had leupold put a mil dot reticle in there.

Batteries are dead for my camera... Can't take a pic of the bell where it says LEUPOLD VARI-X III 6.5-20x50mm LONG RANGE TACTICAL anyways. It's around .090 tall and the same matte color as the rest of the scope. Would be kinda stupid to send a vari-x II back to have a mil-dot and M1 turrets put on it t peupold. You would have as much in it as if you bought a Mark 4... I will just call leupold and see what they say
