Yes, they're defenitley worth the money. Trituim doesn't really work well in the sun, look at night sights for example.

How sunny does it have to be before the scope is useless? I see our troops in Iraq using them so the sun doesn't affect them that much?

The reticle appears black during the day, and comes into color as it gets darker.

I was under the impression that they disappear during the day. I couldn't figure out why someone would pay $800 for a scope that was useless during the day. thanks for clarifying that.

Um.....the Trijicons with the fiber optic get brighter in daylight (see the red tube?). The Tritium is used for low light.
Many are not simply powered by tritium!
