Default Scope for an AR-15

Hi all,

I just picked up a Bushmaster AR-15 with a 20" stainless steel barrel (XM-15). I am looking to drop a scope on it. I do not want to spend a lot, under $200 is a must. Accuracy up to 300 yards would be great. I'm not hunting or competition shooting (not yet, anyway). Just plinking and having fun at my local range, getting comfortable with a new rifle, and considering getting into competition shooting in the future. If and when I do that, then I'll be back here looking for advice on a much better scope. Until then...I want to save some bucks. Any advice?

Thanks!

Chris

Under $200 there is only one worthwhile choice that I know of and luckily, it's also a good choice. Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 Mildot with target turrets. EXCELLENT scope for the money.

For a low cost option I put a NcStar 3-9x42RE AR-15 Rifle Scope on my Colt. I hit what I want at 100 yards. Cost was under $75. Then save for something you really want.

Whichever scope you purchase, make sure it has adequate eye relief.

I've looked around online a bit priced the Bushnell 3200, I've found a few for about $165, the model you guys suggested. So far, that's what I'm leaning towards, unless I find one hell of a deal on something at the Harrisburg show this weekend.

Check out eBay. I bought them there for around $145 delivered. It may take a while to get one at the lowest prices though. Even $165 is a pretty good price, if you don't want to wait your still still doing good @ $165.

Get good mounts, you will need higher than standard mounts to properly line up unless you have a raised flat top AR. The Armalite style one piece mounts are nice, very sturdy and have the proper height. I believe Model 1 makes a good version of that mount for a good bit less than the Armalite (about $65 vs $100).

Your other option is to use decent rings and a riser to get the proper scope height.

I've got a Barska 3-9x32 with Mil DOT and rings on an AR. Something like $65 delivered from Sportsmans Guide. I WAS going to take it to the range this weekend, along with my 'new' Mosin and CMP Greek return M1. Now the snow ruined those plans...again.

FOR WHAT ITS WORTH, "CHEAPER THAN DIRT", HAS THE ACCU SHOT T168. (SCP - 615 ) FOR $45. IT HAS REGULAR AND RED ILLUMINATED RETICLE, RANGE FINDER, AND A MAKESHIFT BULLET DROP COMPENSATOR. FORGET THE FLIP UP SCOPE COVERS, THEY ARE USELESS. IT HAS AN INTEGRAL CARRY HANDLE MOUNT, A FLAT TOP MOUNT AND .22 MOUNT. THATS A LOT OF SCOPE FOR THE MONEY. IT HOLDS ZERO WELL AND WON'T BREAK YOUR BUDGET. IN MY OPINION ONLY THE ACOG AND EOTECH ARE BETTER. BUSCHNELL MAKES A FAKE ACOG FOR $165 WITHOUT THE FIBER OPTIC. AT 100YRDS IT IS SWEEEETTTT.

THEY ALSO HAVE THE STANDARD AR SCOPE FOR $40 WHICH IS A GOOD VALUE TO, BUT NO ILLUMINATED RETICLE. HARD CHOICE THERE.
