Wow..Good job for your first encounter. Next time it happens try and speak up for yourself more.
ETA: They definately violated your rights. Carrying a gun is not a crime and you should not have been detained and disarmed. I'm not one of the people who are going to tell you to sue the police, but you need to follow up and make contact with the appropriate people at the police station, at the very least.

Time to speak to a lawyer.
In fact, its time we take out an ad on the front page of every newspaper in the state letting people know that openly carrying firearms is legal. We also need to get a law passed that penalizes those that make those man-with-gun calls that turn out to be just a law abiding citizen practicing his rights. Or requiring 911 and police dispatchers to disregard such calls upon asking the caller if the person of interest is using it in a threatening or menacing manner and getting a negative response(false reports to be 5 year mandatory sentence + $50K civil fine which goes to the person of interest).
