If you normally use a retention holster, it's fine to use that. I suggest you might want to consider bringing a non-retention holster if you happen to have one. The reason is so you can feel the retention techniques, and not rely on the mechanical device. At a minimum, you can see the difference.

I also intend to do a little retention with long guns. I don't expect many people to have long "blue guns" (at $120 a pop). I have a couple we can use for initial demonstrations, but I have found using real guns with chamber-blocks for the long-gun work works fine. (I have seen some vertical foregrips torn off, but they were the cheap kind and thier owners were glad to find out they were junk and discard them.) I would bring your rifles. I have chamber blocks for those who do not have thier own.

Pete ... I have an Uncle Mike's IWB and a FOBUS OWB with retention. I know you just said that the a non-retention would be better, but will the fact that's an IWB cause problems to where the OWB would be better?

As far as chamber blocks for our rifles ... I don't have any and would need to use one ... does it matter if it's an AR or AK?

We have to address all kinds of holsters. We can work the IWB with a shirt over the gun, and then without. No problem.

Nor is the type of rilfe important to this process. You can use a bolt gun (we just remove the bolt).

The same is true about the sling or carry strap; it's not imporant. I hope we have a variety of them. If I come across something I never saw before, we will work it out on the spot.

Here's a key concept, related to the above, that you can think about in advance: Disarms and retention cannot be taught or practiced in a linear, "if he does this you do that" manner. There are too many variables that might come into play in any given situation to specifically plan for them all, and in any event it all happens too fast to follow a consicous plan.

One of my instructors once referred to the choice of technique or reaction as "intuitive." That might not be exactly the right word, but it is close.

You have to have a body of technique internalized, and a general outline of things what much occur, so that if you are suddently called upon to disarm or retain you own gun, something appropriate just "pops out," with virtually no rational consideration. What "comes up" might not be the best possible technique, but it will be something, and something right now is much, much better than "the best" technique two seconds from now. In two seconds, most incidents have been decided; often they are completely over.

Maybe someone else on the list can better describe this concept. But don't think in terms of programming specific reactions to a specific approach. Think in terms of techiques to deal with broader categories or kinds of problems, and having tools to address those categories.

I'm really shocked that I was even able to "get on the list" considering the relatively low cost for such training. I thought there would have been more interest in a class that only costs $100.

Hell, I'm in a rough spot financially at the moment, but I decided that this sort of class was more valuable than the 300 rds of 9mm I had picked up just prior to seeing this thread, so I sold the ammo to afford the class.
