Haha you guys are crackin' me up.
![]() Regarding me and Pennsy being matched up. I learned that in some instances the disparity in size was to his advantage, and in others, it worked to my advantage. Knowing exactly what to do? Now that is the tricky part. ![]() It was an interesting learning experience to say the least. I'm glad I spent the money, and wish I had the means(financially)to go further, as it is very much one of those "you don't know what you don't know" moments. I really wish that more of the avid OCers in the area would have signed up, as it was both eye opening, and educational. It was a lot to absorb in one day, and I know it was only scratching the surface, but at least I came out of it with some basics that I hadn't even considered before. It was nice training with all of you today. Pete, if you do something like this again, I will tell everyone I know to sign up.

I was a great class and its really something that I think anyone who carries (OC/CC) should seriously consider taking.
I'm about the same size as EM and I know that Pete had to go over some "alternative" was to do things when we were paired up with Pennsy. ![]() It was definitely nice to meet more people from the board. I'm definitely up for some practicing. This is stuff that I don't want to forget.

The class was full of people who were interested (not paid to be there). I have now had a run-thorugh in terms of planning and timing and what content to put where. Things seemed to go smoothly in terms of using Grandmaster Kim's dojo. Most important, we found an open restaraunt/deli right on the next block. I see no reason why we can't do it again, as you all might wish to proceed. Do not, by the way, forget your spouses. Somehow guys want to learn how some of this works, and they forget they have a partner who will likely be present if there is trouble. Peter |

Pete,
On one of the post before the class, I believe you said that there were some video recording equipment there. I noticed the camera in the corner of the room. Where you able to tape any of the class? It would be nice to get a video or something of the class to help us remember what we did. Thanks again to Pete and Shawn! Oh, Pete after that class, I'm really thinking about taking Martial Arts again. Wish I never stopped when I was younger, but I was one of those "big knuckled Taekwondo guys" then.

Perhaps if we do this again, it would be worth having one of the people who knows how to run that system come and video. These techiques are very easy to forget following a one-day seminar; you see them, try them, and then it's time to go. Video would assist in future practice. More effective would be belonging to a dojo, where there are other interested people and competent instructors six days a week. I realize time is an issue, but there is no fast way to improve one's timing and instincts; one simply must do it every week, and pretty soon it all works. Personally, I would not have the discipline to do it if it were not fun. I started judo when I was 48 years old (precisely because I came to understand carrying a firearm for personal defense, no matter how well trained one is with that firearm, is a waste of time unless one can live long enough to deploy the firearm). I wish I had started when I was 18; my life would have been different. I stay with it, despite all the scheduling hassles, because it is fun to do and the caliber of people I have met is impressive. Confidence is an added benefit: it has allowed me to get through several bad situations without tension. I could never be any good at Tae Kwon Do. I couldn't punch out a poodle puppy, and my wind is only good for 30 seconds before I am helpless. But movement and position and shifting weight and mental state I can do, even at my age. I know very effective judoka who are in their 70's. Last edited by PeteG; August 26th, 2009 at 09:24 AM. |

you want to start a new thread and take the bull by the horns here and organize another one? what Pete told me for this one was that I needed a minimum of 8. one suggestion, after you set a date (you will need to pick from Pete's available dates) then set a date past which there can be no refunds of deposits. |
