I'm giving up my spot. I have a conflict that I'm trying to address but it's not fair to leave the class filled since I may not make it.

I will fill that spot if you're still not planning to fill it.

Define "filled."

I am not in charge of enrollment for this one, but in those courses for which I administer a spot is not filled until it is paid for. Making a list of people who say they are "signing up" will inevitably, in variably, in every case, leave empty slots when the day of the course comes. In the range of one-quarter to one-half of people who intended to appear will not.

I think it is a mistake to give people the impression a course is filled, and enrollment therefore cut off, based upon statements by people that they will be enrolling at some point in the future. People who have changes in plans or emergencies will drop off without paying for the slot, and other people who would have wanted the slot and paid for it will have been sent away during the enrollment process.

Things are still bad financially bad at the household, so I am not going to be able to make it. I really appreciate you setting his up. And hopefully you all talk so wonderfully about this class that another one gets set up and I can make that one.

Have fun. I'm bummed big time that I'm not going to be able to make it.

Great job. I am looking forward to it.

I have made special arrangements to get access to the mats at Kim's Martial Arts & Fitness on Sunday, August 23. We start at 9:30a.m.

The street address is 3606 Brownsville Road. Directions are set forth below.

They have video equipment there, which I will use. Although course participants will not be thrown or knocked down, I have a volunteer who will be there to throw me and be thrown to illustrate some important ideas about movement, distance and position. There is, of course, always the chance someone will fall by accident, and sprung mats are safer to fall on than tile floors or gravel.

Dress should be street clothing such as one would wear daily. Holsters and outer garments should be as one wears the side arm in public (concealed, open, whatever).

Don't wear anything you would be worried about getting dirty or torn. Again, nothing should get torn, but we will be moving around a lot and accidents happen.

No operational firearms or live ammunition will be permitted in the training area. There are lockers if you want to wear a gun into the facility, but you must bring your own padlock and lock the weapon up before we begin. If you do not have a padlock, you will have to take the weapon out and lock it in your car. Safety protocols for this course are non-negotiable.

You may want a pen and small notebook.

Finally, bring a pair of work gloves. Some of the retention moves are such that sights and protruding hammers can be hard on the hands of the "gun grabber."

Let me know if you have any questions.

PeteG

DIRECTIONS

3606 Brownsville Road, Brentwood

FROM THE PITTSBURGH SIDE OF MT. WASHINGTON:

Take E. Carson Street (Rt. 837 South) up river, to Becks Run Road. Becks Run Road is 1.5 miles past the Birmingham Bridge. You will see it coming down from your right, under a high railroad trestle.

Turn Right on to Becks Run Road, and follow it 2.3 miles to the crest of the hill, where it intersects with Brownsville Road. You will pass though a couple of traffic lights and a water treatment plant on your right.

When you get to the crest of the hill, go LEFT on to Brownsville Road. Follow Brownsville Road 1.2 miles.

This will take you through two traffic lights and a couple of stop signs. You will know you are approaching the right block when you see a fire station and the Brentwood Public Library on your left. Park anywhere you can find at that point, as you are a 60 second walk from the place, and parking is sometimes hard to find.

Kim's Martial Arts and Fitness is at 3606 Brownsville Rd. Unfortunately, there is no number on the front of the dojo. There is, however, a big sign. It is directly across from a middle school that is impossible to miss.

DIRECTIONS: FROM THE SOUTH HILLS:

I think the easiest (although not necessarily the shortest) route is to take Rt. 51 South to the intersection of Brownsville Road and Rt. 51, which is a major intersection. Go left on to Brownsville Road (toward Pittsburgh). 3606 Brownsville Road is on the left, about .9 miles from the intersection with Rt. 51.

You will pass a fire station, and Kim's is on the next block on your left. Note the middle school. If you pass the Brentwood Public Library, you have gone too far.

DIRECTIONS WHEN YOU GET THERE:

There are a couple of house rules at the dojo. When you enter the front door, you will be in a large room with a tile floor and set of shelves or cubbies on the right. The cubbies are for your shoes. One must remove their shoes and hats before entering the dojo proper. Either socks or bare feet are okay.

There's a pizza place one door up from the dojo, and lots of places to eat within a few blocks. We will break for lunch, so you can either go out or brown-bag it. Food, beverages and smoking are prohibited beyond the entry foyer. If you stay at the dojo to each, you will be able to sit in the foyer area. There are vending machines with juice and water. Please smoke outside.
