Soccer mom will be packing her gun again

LEBANON, Pa. - A mother who angered fellow parents when she wore a holstered pistol at her 5-year-old daughter's soccer game got her concealed weapons permit back today after a judge overruled a sheriff's decision to revoke it.

Meleanie Hain testified that she did not intend to intimidate anyone, but felt she had to carry the gun openly because warm-weather clothing made it difficult to hide a firearm. She said her husband's line of work, which was not disclosed, made her a "greater target" than the average person.

Lebanon County Judge Robert Eby said the law required him to return Hain's permit, but he questioned her judgment.

"Fear doesn't belong at a kid's soccer game from any source," Eby said.

Hain lost the permit after other parents complained last month that she was openly carrying a loaded and holstered handgun at her daughter's soccer game.

A youth soccer coach said he approached Hain at the Sept. 11 game and asked her to move to the other side of the field, away from the sideline where the children were standing.

"I'm certainly not looking to shoot anyone over a goal," Hain told Eby on Tuesday.

Lebanon County Sheriff Michael DeLeo said he pulled Hain's license after fielding the parents' complaints.

A couple dozen courtroom spectators broke out in a light applause when the judge issued his decision.

George Christianson, DeLeo's lawyer, said the decision would not be appealed.

Hain said she was satisfied with the result and expected to return to the sidelines - with her gun - at a youth soccer game in the future.

"It's my preference," she said.

Although I didn't get to watch the hearing, I was there for the lunch / gathering, and it was quite a turnout. It's a nice feeling knowing there is a community of firearm owners out there looking out for each other.

Naturally, we shouldn't question the judgement of those who would call the cops on a fellow parent rather than take five minutes to talk to her in order to ascertain that she is not a threat.

On top of what has been said already, the rest of the sheriff's department was very friendly and checked our weapons, and gave us receipts, without any hastles whatsoever.

There was one woman, who was carrying a pistol in her purse, and the deputies looked for it 3 times, and couldn't find it. She finally had to show them where it was.

In all, it was a good outcome, and I got to meet alot of members, for which I can only hope, to remember their names.

As I sit here thinking about the days events, I have to say that Meleanie did herself, and our cause, proud, on the stand, today. She answered the judge's questions with great detail, and even had him, and the rest of the courtroom, laughing out loud. She handled the pressure, and gave honest and reasonable answers, and brought up good reasons for her method of carry. The judge, himself said, he did not think that she was a threat to anyone, and I think that went a long way toward his descision to rule with the "law" side of things, instead of the "what is right" side, which he preached for quit a while.
