Default Open Carry legal on the AT?

Planning a backpacking trip. Probably going alone. Rather not go unarmed.

Default Re: Open Carry legal on the AT?

there are no gun laws for the AT itself.

however, any gun laws that apply to the land the AT runs through apply to the AT itself.

for example, in PA it is a violation of DCNR rules (and therefore illegal in a roundabout way) to carry a gun in a state park. thus, open carrying on those portions of the AT that run through state parks in PA is a bad idea.

also, other states have other rules regarding carrying in state parks, state forests, national forests, etc. which the AT runs through.

personally, i would never go hiking on a popular trail without a gun. i'd really never go into the woods without a gun at all, but especially not on a popular trail.

40% of the AT is owned by the National Park Service, which bans firearms, in addition to what may pass through a PA State Park.

Which 40% is NPS land? I have no idea, I just stay off the trail.

carry and conceal, leave it in the top pouch of your pack. Better tried by 12 than carried by 6.
