Editor: It’s a sad day when gun-toting individuals have the gall to sue a small borough and its police department in an apparent plan to advance their so-called right to bear arms. They say their rights were violated.

I recently came back from a country that is known for human rights violations. Yet in cities with populations in the millions, I saw no litter, no graffiti and almost no one — except for some police — carrying firearms in public. So, if we are the so-called civilized world, with state police, local police, national guard and our military, why do we need people going around in public, flashing their firearms and intimidating the rest of the population?

If they are so paranoid, maybe they should move to a country that entertains their beliefs. I hope this craziness ends and we don’t go back to a time when we all had to carry arms. Where are my rights in this issue? It seems I have none.

DICKSON CITY
I'd be interested to see if one could carry on an intelligent conversation with this man. I wonder if he understands that there is no litter, graffitti, etc, because in that country they kill people for littering! On the one hand he acknowledges that this wonderful country is known for its human rights abuse, but on the other he extols it for its other "virtues". Of course, maybe that is why he likes Dickson City so much!

Maybe next time he travels to that country, he should consider a one way ticket. It sounds like a place where he would enjoy living.

On the letter you quoted, did we ever leave the time when we all had to be armed? In fact, today's world is much more dangerous than at any time in the past if you ask me. One, I am living now and not then! Two, only the police and criminals have firearms. The majority of average citizens do not.

What scares these people is that OC is a reminder that they are not safe in their everyday lives. Not so much that someone carrying OC is a threat in and of themselves. But the OC person feels it is necessary (as does the CC crowd) which dispells their illusion of safety.

PennsyPlinker,

Now you're talking sense!

I really love you guys coming around and SEEING these people for what they are!
You other people, we are talking about people afraid of regular citizens carrying guns. The Knuckleheads are afraid IF THEY CARRIED GUNS, every person that cut them off or looked at them as LUNATICES (that they are) would be DEAD ON THE SPOT. That's what SCARES them to HELL.
They THINK EVERYONE WOULD THINK LIKE THEM.

It's really easy to think like them and..OUT THINK THEM.
Kind of like a game, let's play DCPD.

Agreed. I guess this guy would rather live in a culture of suspicion and fear instead of liberty. Until, of course, his neighbor rats him out to the oppressive government so he can get an extra food ration that month.

They finally published my reader comments:

Quote:
Incident at Dickson City
It is funny that those who claim to be on the side of law and order do not wish to follow and even support the flagrant disregard for state law. I guess a borough does not have to follow state and federal law. If that is the case, an individual would not have to follow any law that they disagreed with.

The law was unlawfully violated in Dickson City. The law was not followed. There are consequences to not following the law.

As far as rights, the 2nd Amendment was not the only violation. It was the beginning.
Individuals are protected under the law from subjugation by the majority. Welcome to our great Republic.

WEST VALLEY CITY - With his Smith & Wesson .40-caliber semi-automatic holstered on his right hip, Travis Deveraux addressed the mayor and City Council on Tuesday.
Deveraux says he has been harassed by West Valley City police for carrying that gun and treated like a criminal.
"A criminal does not want [police] attention, and they will not openly carry a gun," Deveraux said.
With 10 other gun-toting civilians - who came from as far as Bountiful, Santaquin and Lehi - to support him, Deveraux told the council that their police department has consistently overreacted to his gun carrying. And in one occasion last year, he said, the police officers violated his civil rights.
Deveraux said he was walking around his neighborhood to exercise last December, when he was stopped by a Granite School District officer and "informed that if I touched my gun, I would be killed." The officer called West Valley City Police Department, Deveraux said, three squad cars arrived, and he was detained and his gun taken from him - then, after a few minutes, he was released.
Those were violations of his federal and state constitutional rights, said the Swede who became an American citizen this January.
And they are civil rights abuses that he has only encountered in West Valley City, Deveraux said.
"I don't blame them for being a little bit extra careful," he said, noting that the crime rate is high in Utah's second largest city, "but there's a line they crossed between being a little bit careful and a little bit too careful."
Assistant Police Chief Craig Black said he hadn't been aware of the incident involving Deveraux until hearing about it at the City Council meeting. He said there would be a review of the case by the professional standards board to determined what happened.
Matt Murray, of North Salt Lake, said he has never been bothered by any police officers for openly carrying his gun. Kevin Jensen, of Santaquin, said he has had a few police encounters that were "very professional . . . they just want to make sure you're not a nutcase." But Lehi resident Jeramiah McDonald said he has had problems similar to Deveraux's.
McDonald said that because he is only 19, he can't apply for a concealed-weapons permit and his only option is to openly carry his guns.
Because he felt police officers violated his civil rights, McDonald filed a lawsuit.
Deveraux said he doesn't want to sue anyone, or get an officer fired or fined. He wants West Valley City officers to be trained, or receive more training on gun rights.
Mayor Dennis Nordfelt encouraged Deveraux to file a complaint with the professional standards review board, which oversees any resident problems with the police department.
Black said his officers are trained on gun laws.

Guess DCPD took their training from Utah. It's a shame when law abiding citizens are treated worst than criminals.

The lower the incidence of armed citizenry, the more the police become like the criminals. We can and should get more people to carry. It is a vaccination against the diseases of crime and tyranny.

That's their problem. They have no right to make their feelings my problem and disarm me to make them feel better.

Hey folks...

I have been reading threads about the DC incident and the WB incident over on these Luzerne County forums. http://luzernecounty.proboards13.com

I couldn't take it anymore had to start posting over there too. There are some pretty misguided public servants there.

" I am well aware of the right to carry a firearm although common sense when carrying one should supersede any law.", was one comment that I just couldn't let go of.

You have to apply for access to those forums. It took me a couple of days to be granted access.

anyway.... I thought yinz might be interested.

Thanks for that but I am tired of reading comments from these morons who just can't get stuff straight. They weren't there....they don't know what happened other than what they read in the papers....they think we were looking to cause a problem...they believe since we had guns we had no rights....yeah, I just can't read anymore of that. It got old fast, you know?
