My friend thinks OC will get us killed!!!!

So, I told my buddy I've been OCing off and on lately, and he said he thinks we will have problems with it, so I asked him what he ment, do you mean with ppl in public, he said NO, that if a robber see's one of us OCing that he will shoot us first with out question, period, kind of cought me off guard,I told him I think they would just leave and find another place to rob.I realize, yes that could happen, but I think that most robbers only want the money I dont think they ever intend on killing someone, now a cold hearted killer might be a different story, but I dont by it, I think by us OCing would change the robbers mind and we may have saved everyone without even doing anything by just having it on our side and he would just leave, just my opinion though, whats yours????

To me, its the same type arguement about seatbelts. Wearing one can kill you, not wearing can kill you. To each there own.

Except the vast majority of killers kill people for personal reasons or after a robbery has begun. Random killings are very uncommon. Random killings of persons carrying firearms is even less common. Also, if they're going to kill someone randomly then you're just as likely to be a target if you're not carrying a firearm as you would be if you were.

There are some who criticize open carry and claim it will make you more of a target or ‘the first one shot’ when a robber walks into the 7-11, despite the absolute lack of credible evidence that this has ever happened. If the robber walks in and sees that you’re armed, his whole plan has encountered an unexpected variable. In bank robberies where he might expect to see an armed guard he will have already factored that possibility into his plan, but only for the armed guard, not for open or concealed carry citizens. No robber robs a bank without at least a rudimentary plan. Nevertheless, being present for a bank robbery is an extremely remote possibility for most of us regardless of our preferred method of handgun carry, so let’s go back in the 7-11. If the robber sees someone is armed he is forced to either significantly alter the plan or abort it outright. Robbing is an inherently apprehensive occupation, and one that doesn’t respond well to instant modifications. He is not prepared to commit murder when he only planned for larceny. He knows that a petty robbery will not garner the intense police manhunt a murder would. He doesn’t know if you’re an armed citizen or a police officer and isn’t going to take the time to figure it out. Either way, if someone in the 7-11 is unexpectedly armed, how many others might be similarly adorned and where might they be? Does this unexpectedly armed individual have a partner who is likewise armed nearby, someone who is watching right now? Self preservation compels him to abort the plan for one that is less risky. So we see that the logic matches the history; open carriers are not the first ones shot because it doesn’t make sense in any common street crime scenario that they would be. If your personal self protection plan emphasizes “Hollywood” style crimes over the more realistic street mugging, it might be best to stay home.

That argument always reminds me of the bad guys from the old Death Wish movies with Charlie Bronson. I don't think the vast majority of criminals are that bold and brazen. They have a50/50 chance of being shot themselves. Why not just pick an easy target? I worry more about cops.

Additionally, based on interviews with actual criminals it is a pretty common thing, almost like a rule, for criminals to go after and attempt to victimize the absolute most vulnerable targets they can find. Drunken brawls being the rare exception.

There's a story on here where an open carrier possibly stopped a robbery attempt just by pumping his gas.

It's a common belief.

It makes a LOT of sense if you think about it. Well, if you only think about it for a split second... if you think about it a little more, you realize that things aren't that cut and dry.

Most people prefer not to think that much. Thinking hurts.

The only problem I see with that quoted argument is that it assumes rational, logical thought on the part of the bad guy. If someone has chosen to rob a bank or a store, there has already been some loss of rational thinking, so God only knows what the thought processes would be. In spite of this, I'm not one to believe in the "first one shot" theory, though.
