What OC does do is remove the element of surprise from the carrier, thereby somewhat swinging the advantage back to the BG. If I am in a store and carrying concealed, I get to decide if and when my weapon comes out. Maybe I wait for an opportunity to grab cover first, or clear my line of fire. If a BG sees I have a firearm on my hip and decides to move forward with the crime, guess who is his first priority...me. His eyes never leave me for more than a split second, and you can be sure his weapon will be sweeping me often to ensure I don't draw. Worst case (outside of immediately being shot) I get disarmed at gunpoint and he now has a well maintained quality firearm in his possession instead of that shitty .22 that may or may not work due to lack of maintenance and care. I'm also willing to bet my Gold Dots are a bit higher quality than his $9 walmart target ammo...
I take all that into consideration and then weigh the likelihood of the mere presence of a weapon on my hip to prevent a crime against it. In the end, I have decided that OC is my preferred method of carry, except in certain situations where I feel a low profile will better suit my objectives. (typically when I have my kids with me). When my kids are with me my objective is 100% to protect them before anyone else in the world, and therefore feel I could utilize the lack of scrutiny (and time to plan) from a BG to get my kids out of immediate danger. |

I bet I can dig up a couple dozen videos where people that weren't openly carrying a firearm were shot even though they were complying with the robbers. I doubt I'll be able to find a single one where an OC'er was targeted first during a robbery.
I know of one video where a robber walked past a uniformed LEO and attempted to rob a store with a knife. Robber's ain't too bright most of the time. Of course, have some situational awareness is a good way to prevent such a situation from happening to you.

Damnit, longcall911 nailed it and I need to spread more rep before I can give him more.
Let me ask you this. If you were desperate enough to rob a person or place, would you risk being shot in return? If yes, how much planning are you doing? If it's serious planning with practice, how much would us carrying matter to you then? Chances are, us carrying would still matter, and you'd pick an easier target.

I just read this quote in another article, and am posting it in this thread just for informational purposes. The full article can be seen here:

If you OC in Philadelphia you DEFINITELY stand a higher chance of being killed; by the police.

I OCed into PNC and they gave me money.
After I gave them my debit card and entered my pin. Back on topic, if you get targeted specifically for carrying, then chances are enough planning and preparation was made that you're screwed one way or the other. The chances of that are very slim, and you'll likely be avoided by anyone planning harm.
