Windex will work real good, so will the hoppes # 9, still check it in a day or to, you will have a lot of fun with it.

Take good care of it, it is an historicaly inportent gun from WW 2 and it looks to be all original.

european surplus ammo is some of the very best. just because it's corrsive does not make it cheap or low quality ammo. these guns also spend their entire service life shooting corrosive ammo.
if you shoot a lot of 8mm, stock up on teh yugo 8mm on the market now. yeap it corrosive, but it;s good stuff.

you have your solution alittle backwards there.

windex is expensive water in this case.
hoppes #9 will have no cleaning effect of teh salts.
the primers in corrosive ammo is what creates the "problems". they behind a soup of crap that is a hydroscopic acid....meaning it can suck moisture out of the air and the amount varies... less on a dry day means a barrel might show no rust if left over night, but a humid summer day could yeild enough moisture to ruin a barrel over night.

the salt is water soluble.
hot water, that's it just hot water is all that's needed to clean up with after a session with corrsive ammo, after that oil as normally would and call it good.
the hot removes the salt and heats the metal, remove from water, shakle off teh exessive and start wiping, the metal will just about dry it's self from teh heat.....the average house has roughly 120 degree hot water.

i shoot my 8mm very often, Its one of those mitchells mausers. I like to use their brand of ammo, i find it a dunhams and it has always shoot really well for me. Its around $15 a box o' 20. Its Non- corrossive and Is loaded to 8mm standards, not like the down loaded ameriacan 8mm hunting ammo

Are you an experienced rifle shooter? It looks like the trigger was taking a bit of getting used to. There is a fair amount of vertical stringing that makes me think that there was breathing cycle changes while you were shooting. The rest of your shots were grouping fairly consistently. That makes me think that as you were getting used to the trigger, you didn't quite know where it would break and were shooting in different places in the cycle. Was there any wind? At 50 yards, it's not going to push big heavy bullets as much, but some. Looks like the sights are shooting a bit high at 50, which is common for a "battle rifle"; you gotta be able to hit targets further out there, especially in trench warfare. I'd say you have a little bit of fundamentals to work on, but like you got a beautiful rifle that needs to get shot more. Have fun and shoot it up.

Is that one of those Mitchell Mauser specials?

As the other poster said rifles like the Mauser, 1903's, etc were designed to be shot well beyond 50yds. The USMC qual course begins at 200yds.

Windex or hot soapy water for cleaning the corrosive ammo. I don't buy factory ammo, so all mine is reloaded. This is a pic from a few years ago sighting in my K98 at 100yds. There are two 5-shot groups as I was just trying to adjust the sights so I could take the rifle deer hunting. Not bad for open sights.

Yes it is a Mitchells Mauser.... recently i shot from 300 yards and missed a pistol target by a inch... it would have taken out any human sized body....

I wish my mauser shot like Tomcat088
i found it at a local fun shop for a $120, but it has no rifling left. at 50 yards i get a perfect bullet profile key-hole in the paper and neat whizzing sound as the round goes down range. i can keep them in a 15" circle but no real group.

I got it more for nostalgia reasons. it has the Nazi stampings on the barrel and reciever, but no matching numbers. looks great beside my Garand, my M91/30, and my Enfield. Just need to pick an Arisaka.
