22rf = 22 rimfire

Since it's the first can you have heard in person your expectations are possibly unrealistic.

It should sound similar to a pneumatic nail gun or paint ball gun.

Hollywood quiet is not realistic. Cans significantly reduce the sound, but they dont make it "quiet".

I am kind of surprised he is still not happy with the performance. With that pistol the ammo shouldn't matter, I can use CCI Minimags with my P22 & Pilot and it sounds great, extremely discreet, very hearing safe. I would have thought even someone with no experience would have had their expectations met, 22 cans are as close to hollywood quiet as you can get. This should sound closer to the staple gun you might use to hang your targets, but I will defer to Mtdew on this as my experience is limited to my AAC Pilot.
EDIT: You know what I am so used to shooting with CCI CB Longs I forgot what regular LR sounds like, it is closer to a paintball gun, or pneumatic nail gun. Try CB Longs if you can find them, NOT CB Shorts, it is amazing.

BIRTHMACHINE, might I ask where you are firing it? Open field, woods, indoor range, basement? I have found an increase in noise if you are in a confined area, although I would think indoors this would still impress.

People generally have differing opnions of what hollywood quiet is. Some have the expectation of being able to shoot suppressed in a room w/ people and not have them hear the shot.

I'll 2nd the CBs as well. On a bolt rifle w/ appropriate can all that can be heard is the FP hitting the case. But even that is louder than some peoples "hollywood" expectations.

im shooting it in a confined space. overall im not impressed with the performance. while im not extensively experienced with suppressors, i would have thought it would be. so heres my next question, i can get a hold of some ultrasonic couplant from work. good idea or not?

also, i have seen a friend shoot a 10/22 with a 2 liter bottle duck taped, that sounded better.

Water works as well as Gel.

you need to compare it to other cans, are you sure you got a new baffle system from AAC? or did they upgrade your old one

Just a thought, are you shooting it in your house? Because the target is going to add a lot of noise when it is struck and it's hard to discern all of it from the sound of the discharge. In my experience. Also, consecutive rapid shots are more quiet than the first.

I wouldn't use ultrasonic couplant. Most of the stuff we have is vegetable based I think. Sometimes you can smell it going rancid. Try water, grease, shaving cream, or a commercial suppressor product.

the first round pop is louder than the rest, it actually gets quieter as you shoot. im using winchester high velocity here, you can hear the bullet hit the steel plate (70yrds) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYM8NdXMg6c
