Default Hypothetical NFA question

Let's say for a moment that the 1986 law regarding full autos is repealed, how far down in price do you think full autos would go?

The guy who owned the M2 we brought to school bought it before the 1986 ban took effect and he paid $5,000 I believe he said. Last time I talked to him, they were selling for $75,000+.

Do you think full autos would go down enough in price that regular people would have a better chance of buying them?

Supply and demand. Prices would most likely stay the same until more were produced. In fact, prices might rise since some people with a lot of cash who didn't want to go through red tape would buy some up.

Well, considering the last Semi M2HB's I've seen sell were in the area of 7k I feel the price for some of the less common or easily manufactured guns would be higher than it was pre 86, the economy is also different.

AR's and other easily converted/manufactured would be same as semis. Guns that are no longer being produced or exists only in limited quantities as parts kits will be steeper as well but not as out laddish as they currently are.

I wouldn't mind owning a Sterling, Uzi, M3, and the list goes on... Me likey subguns!

Err... the NFA of 34 will never be repealed, and probably never the NEW MGs ban in the 86 FOPA.

however, if the MG manufacturing ban in the FOPA was removed, you'd still have all the "red tape" that was instituted in 1934.

Prices would be dictated by availability of parts, the guns to convert, and labor is all.

So a NEW m16 would be same as a current semi, plus the NFA tax and dealer/MFG markup.

an M2HB is NOT worth $75K... even at todays NFA prices, unless its a really really rare C&R model from WWII, made by a rare MFG like Westinghouse or something.

My Colt m16 i bought in 2000 for $4500 is wort about $13-15K depending on accessories.

This is one of the big reasons we, as firearm owners, need to go on the offensive in regard to the NFA. Laws that blatantly make things legal only for the rich are frequently good targets to shoot down.

To answer your question, the price would drop through the floor. The only reason that machine guns are so expensive is the supply problem. A select fire AR/AK costs no more to produce than a semi-auto AR/AK.

Down with the NFA! I want a M240B damnit!

I can't even imagine what that will be worth in another ten years. You should fight to ensure that the laws don't ever get repealed. That one rifle might turn out to be enough to fund your entire retirement some day.

I'm kind of in agreement with people here. Any readily produced select fire guns should only be incrementally more than a non select fire (in reality they should be the same, but people will pay up for it).

Rare guns will always command a premium.

It also depends if the manufacturing for individuals would get repealed too. Look how many semi ARs,AKs,FALs,etc are out there. I would bet that 90% would get converted and there would be a flood of them on the market.

MOst now are just a few K more than Their Semi Models.

The most I've seen a M2 go for was just under $50K Because It came with a truck load of mounts, parts and ammo, IIRC 12K rounds of ammo.

IMHO, Real C&R /Collector pieces would retain their value.

With the way the worlds going I don't think 34/86 will mean diddly squat soon.

The M2 in question was a WWII gun.

As for full auto ARs, a good number of current manufacturers already make full auto versions of the rifles they produce now. Check out their websites under the military/LEO categories.

Full auto AKs, Stens, Brens, FALs and such would be easy to build as most of the parts kits already have the parts available to rebuild them as FA. Hell AKs would be second to come down in price as the number of AKs in the world is still way up there.

Think of the number of guns destined to become parts kits that still have FA trigger groups.

FA MP-5s and such are still in production so the price would probably drop considerably on stuff like that after a while. All that would have to happen would be for manufacturing to catch up to the demand.

I think we should start petitioning to repeal the 1986 law. It discriminates those who aren't wealthy (or Ronnie). So we wouldn't be repealing a law banning guns, just repealing a law that gives the rich a leg up on us poor(er) folks.
