Default Order of purchase and paperwork

I've quickly read over the sticky's...just to be sure I'm understanding things correctly can someone please verify.
FYI - I don't intend to build anytime this year but want to purchase the lower now. I'll have to complete in baby steps. I do not have anything other than handguns.

1. Purchase stripped lower for AR15. Can this be shipped directly to me, or do I have to go thru dealer? Was planning to order online thru SA.
2. Engrave.
3. Complete Form 1.

Is this correct? Or have I miss read.
Suggestions/Comments.

You have to still have the lower shipped to any FFL and pick it up from there. Then you can start on the paper work.

But you can order your lowers from places on the internet and have them shipped to just about any dealer that will accept them and do the transfer for you.

Send your lower off to Orion for engraving. They do great work.

If I were you I would wait to get the approved paperwork back before engraving to make sure there are no problems.

I know there won't be any problems with getting clearance, or getting approved.
I'm not in any great rush to get it completed at this point....saying this now, but we'll see how I feel with the lower sitting here.
I have heard/read good things about Orion. Thanks for the info.

In fact I would do the inverse and get it engraved first. This saves you the problems of the engraving coming back F'd up and having inconsistencies with your form 1.

But you are not required to say on the form 1 exactly what you will be engraving. If there is a typo on the engraving it will not send you to jail.

Correct. I'll give you that. On the other hand on the Form 1, block #4 letter h states, "Additional description (include all numbers and other identifying data which may appear on the firearm"
One could interpret that as the required information that is to be engraved on the firearm. IMO. I suppose I would err on the side of "safety" and put what I had engraved on the firearm in that space, YMMV though that is what it appears to be to me. Thoughts?

Sluggie, here is why i feel you might be a little wrong on this. I would send the lower out before the form 1 because what happens if they somehow damage / loose the lower in the mail etc.

I have sent lowers out to orion after the form 1 was approved but i prefer to ingrave first then submit forms just in case something goes wrong. Also, if you wait until after the form is approved, you now have an nfa item that you can't just drop off to the local engraver. you need to stay there with it or make sure they have their 02 / 07 (i think) so they can be in possesion of the nfa item.

For me, it just seems easier to do the engraving first then the forms.
