Exclamation Re: What if there was a gunman on campus? Berks colleges, police prepare

Read up on some of my posts over on WarRifles.com (I use the same ID/'handle') about colleges, when the SHTF. If anybody has a kid at a Pittsburgh area university, and they KNOW how to handle a weapon, and are mature enough to keep it with them, by ALL MEANS DO SO. College campi in large cities will be some of the UGLIEST places known to MAN, if the SHTF while school is in session. EXPECT the Golden Horde to KNOW this, move in, and run it like they own it. And expect the campus 'security' to hit the road, like the "HOT DONUTS NOW" sign just came on, and they're GIVIN' 'em away!!!

My experience in a state u. (not a PA school, though) is less than 15 years old, and the VPI massacre confirmed everything I already KNEW, about how BADLY college campuses are 'prepared' for such things. Blacksburg, VA is the middle of NOWHERE, compared to DA' 'Burgh - or Philly - so you DON'T want your kid trapped in either of those places, AND defenseless before the MOB!

While PD needs to always be training to the crazed gunman on campus....

I am a little more concerned in the traing to react to the Seige of a Elementary or Highschool.

Anyone who doesn't see the Beslan School crisis as a test run for whats coming here, needs to think again. It is coming, and it won't be just one school.

No matter how you slice it, it always boils down to reaction time. Action is, and always will be, quicker than reaction. The police/security reaction time is slow, no matter how you slice it. I was not into firearms when I attended college, but I went to one of those out of the way, rural school where a tragedy like Virginia Tech occurred. With one or two cops on duty, one town cop on duty, and PSP being 20 minutes away at best, an appropriate reaction probably could be measured in hours, not minutes.

I carry because when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

Same goes for where I live... very rural, 20 bucks says PSP (who "covers" my area) dont even know where my street is. It was renamed due to 911 system (who, when I call dont answer... County communications answers, then they have to transfer me to PSP.... gimme a break) earlier in the summer and I can guarantee they couldnt find it if they had to. They probably COULD find it, if I were cowering in a closet giving directions while a stranger is in my house, but that aint happening. Good luck with the wife giving directions because she cant find her way out of a wet paper bags somedays. (Still love her, though).

The situation may be different in Urban areas, but the larger part of our great state is still very rural.

You're absolutely right Marc. The sad thing is that if you were in that situation, you'd likely be expelled, wrongfully arrested, and branded as a criminal, despite doing the right thing and saving countless lives in the process.

Reaction time is important, but it needs more then getting the negotiator there quickly. Till now most experience has been dealing with a social disfunctionals that want to get back at a few class mates that teased him, or the girl that they thought was theirs.

What are our public officails trained to do?

1. Setup C3
2. Negotiate

No I am not minimizing their training. We know our men in unifomr are willing, and trained to go in when the order is given.

BUT ....

If it is a terrorist group, there is no need for step two. They are not going to negotiate, they are there for one thing, Body Count. The response then has to be one that will reduce the body count. That will require a hard and swift counter-attack. No jacking around

Reminds me of an old joke - you call 911 out in the sticks, & get no response. Call back about ten minutes later, tell 'em, "I'm just calling back to cancel the emergency request - I went out and shot the perpetrators." Within 3 minutes, 10 squad cars roll up.

Cops get out, look around, come to your door all miffed - "You LIED - you said you SHOT somebody." Your reply - "Well, YOU lied too! You said it'd be another 30-45 minutes before you could send someone!!!"
