Default Phila. police return fire, killing gunman

http://www.philly.com/inquirer/home_...l_man__20.html

Some tactical tidbits from this article:

The shooting happened exactly three weeks after the last fatal police shooting, in which officers fired 85 rounds at a gun-wielding man in South Philadelphia. Steven Miller, who neighbors said was incoherent after smoking marijuana laced with embalming fluid, was hit at least 20 times, The Inquirer has reported.

Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson has said the case is being investigated to determine how and why police fired so many bullets.

Umm.. .maybe because the guy was a freakin' Zombie??

Well that good to see there is at least 1 competent cop in Philly. Only took him 2 shots.

To Whitefeather, I can't speak for Philly but in Camden over 25 years I've been on over 100 homicides and the vast majority were criminal on criminal, I would guess about 80% and I suspect Philly is the same.

Most killings since 1980 in cities are in one way or another drug related.

This guy died in an apparent robbery do they still include him homicide numbers, how about the 10 the police shot also?

The real question I would like to know how many non-criminals or innocent people actual are murdered in Philly?

When ever you listen to anti-gunner testify before committees they always seem to retell a few of the same tragedy homicides, baby shot in car, bystander stuck by bullet, stray bullet penetrates someone home and kills them shaving etc.... they are truly life changing tragedies by criminals that shouldn't be on the streets in the first place. Anti-gunners trading on this human tragedy for political gains are almost as sickening

This crime control problem is not just Philly crime problem alone, there are several violent blocks in downtown Pitts that would stack up against any same size area in Philly or any place short of a war zone.
I don't know about news reports, but in the CDC's death statistics "homicide by firearm" includes those criminals killed by police and citizens. Thereby inflating the numbers of people killed by guns.

People often read homicide as murder, some homicides are good things, such as self-defense killings and most exicutions by the state or federal government. Some are not evil or good but just accidents.

Thanks for the reply Montell C. Williams & T Durdin you confirmed I already thought.

Sure wish they had the stats showing criminals kills other criminals broken out as a separate tangible number. Wish they would also the numbers of police shooting criminals, and citizens defending themselves against criminals listed.

Unfortunately it would expose the numerous failures of the criminal’s justice system. Public outcry maybe would force the reform the system into the victim’s justice system to try to solve the root problems crimes. Instead of the current system of building warehouses to put criminals in for bad behavior, yet releasing them early for good behavior in prison how does that serve the public interest.

A couple other ways the stats are scured is, as you heard most people know the person who killed them, sure they do, most drug dealers know the other dealers so when one kills the other over turf it is listed as an acquaintance[ friend]. Also hispanic initiated homicides count as being comitted by whites in the uniform crime report put out by the FBI.

The Hatfields and Mc Coys knew each other but they weren't friends.

Gentlemen & Ladies, Back in early june there was a post: "Whats going on with
all the crime". I had posted a response and put in information from the PA.
Department of Health. Minority Health Disparities in Pennsylvania. Mortality(2005)
It would be interesting to compare the figures from what the State Crime Reports
publish, than what causes of Death are reported from the Death Certificates.
As an example:
Black residents had a significantly higher age adjusted mortality rate than
Whites for the following catagories:
Drug-induced Deaths
Firearm related Injuries
Homocides
Homocides (Firearm Discharge)
Hispanic residents had significantly higher age adjusted mortality rates than
Whites for the following catagories:
Firearm Related Injuries
Homocide
Homocide(Firearm Discharge)
Drug-induced Deaths (No Stats)
Source: Pennsylvania Deptartment of Health, Pennsylvania Certificate of Death
NOTE: Rates are age adjusted per 100,000 using the 2000 U.S. standard million
population.
