A lot of jobs have down time. Sometimes there is a lot of down time. During that down time what is the difference between watching TV, reading a book, gossiping, reading Cosmopolitan magazine, and surfing the net? What is the difference between surfing e bay or facebook, and surfing gun stuff?

The pro gun contingent at work is one of the reasons I decided to go staff. I have no idea what administrations take on it is, but the staff is very pro gun.

I agree. if you are on company time you should be doing the business of the company. No looking a guns, chicks or even home remodeling web sites. Work time is for work.

Most companies don't work that way. Aside from a small minority, most allow you to use phones, email, and bandwidth for reasonable personal use.
Incidentally, multiple studies have shown this to increase productivity.

Please post some links to the studies. Was Homer Simpson the person doing the study?

There's the first one that google brought up. There have been others, they all find the same thing.
It's really not that odd of a result. Allowing breaks for people to relax allows them to concentrate more during the period that they are working. People just aren't built to work non-stop for 8 hours at a time.

And what about during downtime? Not all jobs have something you can be doing every single minute, and if you start dumping tons of mindless busy work on people all the time they will leave.

LOL that doesn't happen! I'm a draftsman/CAD Operator, when I have nothing to draw or when I'm not searching out drawings for the estimators to bid etc, I have free time.

What would you have me do? Sit here and fall asleep?
Today is a good example I've printed over 100 drawings in a Construction set for the job foreman, but since we have nothing new for me to draw at the moment I can only wait for the next job to come in..

That was this morning and since I have nothing else on "my plate" I'm here on PAFOA.. They know it! When work comes in they expect me to drop the "surfing" and get to work. That is fine by me, because if I'm busy my day goes quicker, but if there isn't any work, they dont' expect me to sit here like a bump on a log either..

I do continue to take on-line courses when they come available also..
So the company benefits...

you might want to do some research into the subject before belittling people who actually know what they are talking about.

in general, being a slave driving taskmaster is about the worst way to get people to be productive. allowing them to integrate their work and life is generally a good way to get people to be productive.

Planco is kind of a screwed up company, IMO. I have a very close friend who worked there for a few years in data analysis (methinks) who got fired on the grounds that he harrassed the guy (yes, GUY) who was sexually harrassing him. How did he harrass the harrasser?? By filing a complaint with HR. Gave him some line about tolerance toward homosexuals in the workplace, blah blah. About him being a homophobe, even though the other dude wasn't even gay.

"Tolerance isn't about acceptance of others, it's about bowing to our BS rules"--Me

Look, one thing we all seem to steadfastly ignore here is that guns SCARE non gun folks. Knowing that, why the hell would you risk your employment by surfing gun sites at work? Oh, I know, because we should be ALLOWED to. But there's no constitutional guarantee for surfing the internet at work.
This is the only part of your posts that I disagree with...people here are "pissing and moaning" because the company (and incidentally you) are equating gun related sites to porn or white supremacist sites....

Furthermore, everyone he worked with already knew about his interest in guns so catching him looking for a part to fix his wife's gun didn't impart any new and shocking information upon them.

Can they fire him for browsing on company time? Yes...BUT unless they're firing people for visiting bestbuy.com or walmart.com or comics.com then he does have an argument in his favor (even if it does only go as far as UC payments)

I don't buy the crap about fearing for their safety because he was looking at pictures of shotgun parts on a manufacturers webpage.
