I ran across this article this morning on my now almost twice daily review of the presidential race.
Could this be a bid by a pro 2A democrat to join forces with Obama to soften the sharp anti-hand gun ownership sentiment that both current Presidential candidates possess? Could this be an attempt to head off the resistance from the portion of the population that will not support either candidate because of their anti second amendment view and the comments that support firearms for sport only? I am a Democrat and have found myself disappointed in the several areas of each Democratic candidate. Of course the 2A stance of each has been at the top of the list each time. I constantly point it out to my wife who does not share my beliefs in private gun ownership. I have attached the article and associated link below... New Mexico's Richardson endorses Obama http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23740104/from/ET/ Bill Richardson's Taped speech at the NRA's "A Celebration of American Values." Held in September. http://www.nravalues.org/default.asp |

I think Richardson realizes Hillary Clinton is not electable...too many people (including me) despise that bitch.
Obama is also an asshole...wouldn't vote for that ass either |

He is also a stupid man. Not too many people stab the Clintons in the back and walk away unscathed. Stay tuned for a tragic accident in the very near future. |

I wouldn't mind seeing an Obama/Richardson ticket.
I don't approve of Obama's history regarding firearms, of course. On the other hand I'm not a single issue voter, nor do I belong to any political party, so every vote is a matter of compromise. Obama has expressed some views regarding gun-control, particularly during his tenure in the Illinois state legislature, that I find to be pretty extreme. That being said, he seems less likely than other politicians to pursue divisive issues and his approach towards government seems to be more based on consensus building. I have far more reason to believe that Obama would reach across the aisle to work with Republicans than Hillary. That lessens some of my fears that he would pursue an anti gun rights agenda. At any rate the Democratic majority in congress is too slim to push on such a divisive issue, and there are many more relatively pro-gun Democrats than in the past. Pennsylvania's own Senator Casey and Virginia's Jim Webb being examples. Democrats seem to be moving more towards gun-control being a state's rights issue, ironically enough, because they know it's a political loser on the national level. Gun control only helps them lose national elections, and they're beginning to learn that. Another reason why I'm comfortable cautiously supporting Obama, is because I think he is capable of doing far more than any other politician to address the actual causes of inner-city violence. The fact of the matter is, whether or not it's politically correct to admit it, is that gun violence is by and large a black urban problem. White liberals are happy throwing some welfare dollars into the inner-city and patting themselves on the back for a job well done, and maybe making life a bit more difficult for suburban and rural gun owners for good measure. Obama seems to genuinely understand the social and economic challenges that face the black inner city, and actually doing something substantive about that will go far further towards reducing gun violence than any gun control measure could ever hope to do. If nothing else, seeing a well-educated black man as President might give many misguided inner-city youth hope and show them that there is an alternative to a life of drugs and crime for them. I'm sure that won't be a popular position around here, but that's the way I see it. Now if Hillary gets the nomination, my votes going straight for McCain. Give me a break. You and I both know he didn't say that. Last edited by eXceLon; March 24th, 2008 at 08:55 PM. |
