A friend of mine who is in the security bussiness for a major casino in Las Vegas,
advised me of a neg discharge at the 2008 Shot Show last week, while he was
in attendance. It was by a person well familar with firearms working for a well
known vendor. This did not cause any injury, thankfully, SAFETY IS 24/7.

Yeah, it was probably brought in like that. I don't hand someone a firearm with a closed action, EVER, nor do I take one with a closed action from anyone. I have seen the most piss poor gun handling at "sporting goods" stores. I have been crossed by more muzzles than I like to remember. I just stay away from those places. Shame on both parties in this incident.

I understand what you mean, but your statement would be taken the wrong way by several folks..

Who should determine if you are allowed to own or handle a gun?
I am sure our next president will make that real easy. Nobody.. Safety for all.

A nice Hunter Education Course would not be a bad idea for those folks in question..

It all serves as education for everyone.

If a trigger is pulled with a round in the chamber, the gun will fire. Every time before pulling the trigger, everyone should remind themselves of this basic truth. The fact that this happened to a former cop shows that it can really happen to anyone and that the more familiar and comfortable one is with guns, the easier it is to get too complacent. That's another important lesson I guess. Get too casual and bad thing WILL happen sooner or later.

You dont know how easy this could happen untill you preform a safety check and a bullet comes flying our your weapon, that happened to me last sunday at the PMSC shoot, I pulled out my 12 Gauge, checked the action to see a bullet come flying out and hit the top of my tonneau...

2 more safety checks proved the gun to be empty, then I remembered on a windy night, the dog making grouwling noises at the door and just dropping a round in the open chamber just in case...

Silly me, I had not checked the gun before putting it away again. Good thing I did not dry fire it.

One of the first things that I teach newbies is what the action of a gun is,

and to ALWAYS open the action before handing a gun to someone -

NO EXCEPTIONS EVER!

It also amazes me how many times we read about something like this and the person holding the gun when it went off was a "profesional??" thats has been around guns and or has been trained in the safe handling of guns.

This happens several times per year and i am not being dramatic either.
