Man admits making up story, shooting own leg

A man who reported being shot by a stranger in downtown State College confessed on Monday that the wound was self-inflicted, State College police said.
Police, who did not identify the man, said he came to Mount Nittany Medical Center’s emergency room about 2:20 a.m. Saturday with a gunshot wound in his upper leg. Hospital staff members, as required, reported him to the police.
When initially questioned, the man said he had been shot by a man unknown to him near the Calder Commons apartments on Calder Way, police said. But during subsequent questioning, police said, he admitted shooting himself and fabricating his story.
Police, who did not say how the shooting happened, have not filed any charges so far, though the investigation continues.
